Flex 5 14ALC05 bricked by BIOS version GJCN22WW

2021-07-06, 18:41 PM

When this update was installed, my Flex 5 would not boot. Only a black screen appeared.  I then held F12 while booting and was able to select the NVMe drive and boot to Windows, but when entering the BIOS, this error is shown. A power drain does not fix it.

No changes to the BIOS setup can be saved. I would re-flash it, but BIOS Back Flash is disabled and can't be enabled. Lenovo, please remove this update immediately and find a fix.

This issue seems to be common : see here (https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-IdeaPad-1xx-3xx-5xx-7xx-Edge-LaVie-Z-Flex-Notebooks/BIOS-update-GJCN22WW-bricked-my-Flex-5-14ALC05/m-p/5086469).

That thread was locked. Let's keep this clean so the issue can be addressed.

Welcome to the Community Forums @luke2m

Thank you for starting a separate post. Given that quoted thread, please share your machine type model / MTM (ex. 81C70000RK) from the sticker as it would help in specifying your machine variant and in properly addressing the issue. A machine type model / MTM consists of more than four characters. Do not include your machine serial number in the thread.

Regards.

Hey all. I have a ticket out as well for my brand new Lenovo Flex 5. Mine is not bricked but gives the error when entering the bios. Lenovo has mailed me a repair USB drive. I will update when it arrives. Support did try to blame it on my upgrading to a 1tb nvme and did not mention there was an ongoing issue with this firmware. Very disappointed. Bought from costco, so I might return it and go back to Dell.

Hi @Sim7

It appears that this is your first post in this thread. You may also want to share your machine type model / MTM in this thread. You can check the previous replies on how you can better check your machine type model / MTM. Please check the link.

We'd appreciate a response.

Regards.

Its Idea Pad Flex 5 14alc05 and i got a ticket to send it in to lenovo service to fix the bios.

Strange that i have to send it in and others get a usb-stick so the bios can be fixed without sending it for service..

If there really is a bootable usb that fixes this, it would be very helpful if Lenovo provided a .iso or .img of it so we can fix this ourselves.

I explained to them almost every laptop I have ever bought, (including my new XPS) I've swapped the hard drive within a week of purchase. They were looking for an out it seemed. They knew it wasn't the drive.
