Hi Redvik,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

It does not support charging though the type c usb port.

Flex 5 aka Yoga 520 requires higher power demand (specification page 26 of the hardware manual) as suppose to be provided by 20 V DC, 45 W / 65 W adapter.

The type C USB port would only offer the features of USB 3.0 standard technology and the type C port interface.

Hope this helps answer your query.

Regards

That's not precisely correct.

USB Type-C (which is the correct name for the connector) is actually supposed to go with USB 3.1, even though it can and is used with USB 3.0 and even USB 2.0 (which is technically, not a supported combination). If Lenovo had included USB 3.x support for USB Power Delivery, which can provide up to 100W of power at up to 20V, the USB Type-C connector could have been used to charge the laptop.

In fact, the USB Type-C connector is really the only major disappointment with the Flex 5. It's a bare, simple data only port and so isn't really more useful than a normal Type-B connector other than it's reversable. Most people who own Type-C devices have a Type-C to Type-B cable. If this connector had included Thunderbolt and DisplayPort, it would have allowed hanging up to two monitors off the laptop, much faster data and the ability to hang an external GPU box off it.

Given that some Flex 5s include a discrete 940MX GPU, at least including the DisplayPort option on the Type-C would have made some sense.

I'm really bummed that Lenovo failed to fully implement the full functionality of the USB-C!

Thanks for your posts.

I bought USB C wall charger 90w in best buy. But my flex 5 1470 can't charging until now. I read this guide before bought charger but that was not suitable to me. I had tested wall charger working properly, and already updated every driver in Lenovo site. If someone has other solution, please let me know it.I bought USB C wall charger 90w in best buy. Thank you Werewolf. Your input has been a lot more productive than the other one's I've seen here, and certainly offers a lot more usable input than anything I've seen from a Lenovo tech.

FYI, I was returning an adapter that did not work for HDMI support and I am about to order a J5 Create #JCD381 which supposedly offers the data only USB feed conversion to HDMI for monitors. Now, with your input, I find out I can't use the charger function. I'm getting closer and closer to returning the Lenovo.

Yeah that really sucks that they didn't implement the charging, espeically now that the new non silicone based slim usbc chargers are hitting the market.

Re:Flex 5 Charging through type c

I purchased a lenovo flex 5 in July. It shipped with both a usb-c charger and a barrel port. The original USB-C charger stopped working so I ordered a new one. Also noticed it had some markings on the interior of the USB-C male connector when it stopped working.

The new charger I bought (also Lenovo branded) worked for 3 days, stopped last night.

Any thoughts? Links to updates I could use? I assume that Lenovo intends for their chargers to work if they ship them with the laptops now. Is that correct?

After combing through dozens of forum posts and YouTube videos I found an obscure reference to running a "power drain". Basically a power drain cycle only consists of unplugging the laptop and holding the power key in and keeping it pressed through a complete boot cycle, from power down to boot up.
