Got an IdeaPad 3 - Factory reset and drive cloning questions

2021-09-17, 5:36 AM

I just bought a new IdeaPad 3 gaming laptop, and have two questions:

  1. I went to folder options in Windows 10 and chose to show hidden and protected system files, then looked at the C drive but couldn't find the factory reset folder. In my previous laptops, HP and Acer, the files needed for factory reset and installing a clean Windows were visible on a drive "D", so I felt safe wiping the C drive and resetting my laptop whenever I needed to. Can you please tell me where exactly are the factory reset and windows image files stored on my new IdeaPad's C drive so that I can avoid touching them?

  2. As a precaution I'd like to clone the new and clean operating system to a USB flash stick before I start filling the hard drive with software. Can you recommend a cloning software that's safe and runs without the need for installation so I could backup my system on a flash stick? I did a search and found many programs, but can't tell which is safe and which is a malware feast.

Thank you very much

Hi

On your support page, MTM and Serial number would be needed at that point,

should be an OPTION to download Recovery Software, onto a 16 GB USB.

On my C:  I have...

C:\>dir recovery*.*
Volume in drive C is Windows-SSD
06/08/2021  16:45    <DIR>          Recovery

14/08/2021  17:10    <DIR>          RecoveryImage

They are the original Lenovo Recovery and a copy of the downloaded Recovery Image,

3.1 GB and 11.6 GB respectively, which I made.

My NVMe has a WinRE area of 1 GB, 50% used.

This is nothing like my HP was, which had about 14+ GB of hidden recovery partition.

Which I cloned using CloneZilla.

I suggest you create your own USB and store it safely,

as a failure of the NVMe and/or C: would seem to make my unit irrecoverable.

If in doubt please ask.
