IdeaPad 320-15IAP clicking sound, do i need to replace the HDD?

2020-09-16, 11:32 AM

The first time it happened I was using MS Word, it started making this sound and everything crashed, after more than a minute a windows error appeared and the pc turned off.

If I try to turn it back on right after, the noise persists, and the computer won't turn on.

If I try to turn it on again after an hour for 5/10 minutes it works, then this noise comes up again and everything stops.

I think the problem is the HDD, also because the sound comes more or less from this point:

I just recorded a few seconds of the sound it emits:

What do you think ?

Hi Jock87,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

First thing to do is to backup all your files.

Run the hardware diagnostics to check on the machine itself.

System crashes / BSOD and clicking noise are symptoms of failing mechanical drives.

Update us how it goes.

Regards

Hi, I can't do anything as the pc doesn't boot anymore. Going to the bios, Information, to the value of 'Hard Disk' it tells me [Not Detected].

This always happens while it makes that click.

Until a few hours ago it was possible at least to turn on, now as soon as I press the power button you hear the click.

Hi Jock87,

Have the harddrive replaced so you would have a working machine to use.

This would also confirm if the drive is still functional testing it on another machine and have another drive working on this laptop.

Having BIOS not detecting the drive does make it a probable hardware issue.

Regards

Mine just started doing the same thing a few days ago. Before the clicking started, it was in a constant boot/reset cycle where it said 'Starting hardware diagnostics and then said something about the drive. Then the boot/reset would start over again. I used a paper clip to hit the small reset button on the left side of the laptop hoping it would do something but the cycle continued. I let the process repeat itself for about an hour and a half and that' when the clicking started. I just bought the laptop January this year but I lost my receipt so I'll have to check with Best Buy to see if there's anything they can do.

The problem was the hard-disk.

I replaced it with an SSD and now it works fine.
