Ideapad 320S-13lKB: -GPU upgrade options

2018-06-18, 13:25 PM

Lenovo IdeaPad 320S-13lKB

Model Name: 81AK

Serial No: xxxxx

Machine Type model: 81AK007AGE

I already have an NVIDIA GeForce MX150 GPU (4GB). However this particular model is not CUDA compatible, which is necessary for my purpose, of training datasets for deep learning programs.

I'd like to upgrade the GPU such that it is CUDA compatible. The list is given here

1. Can my PC's GPU be upgraded to fit the purpose?

2. If yes, which CUDA compatible GPU will work the best?

3. Do you have any other suggestions?

Hi venom8914,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

IdeaPad 320S-13lKB have a soldered GPU chip so it is not upgradable.

It may be better checking for other laptops that supports CUDA.

Your training management team may be able to suggest which ones that work reliably for your purpose.

Regards

Hi @Spidey101,

Thank you for that clarification.

I'd like to add that,
1. I bought the laptop thinking it's CUDA compatible because it said so here.

2. However the CUDA GPU support page did not include it in the list.

So there was ambiguity on NVIDIA's description page, and it has cost me fair amount of money. Now after the purchase, I'm told it doesn't support CUDA, feels like renegading on the promise NVIDIA made, and also unfair.

I'm just a student developing softwares. It's pretty expensive to buy another high end laptop, having already invested so much in this one, only to be told this later.

Can I exchange or pay the differential on some offcial exchange programme please? Or can you please make it a one-off case to exchange? At least tell me what I can do to get out of this expensive mess.

I need a laptop that has CUDA compatible GPU. I study in Germany.

Can you help me out here?

The MX150 is actuallly CUDA supported, it just that the Nvidia CUDA GPU support page hasn't been updated yet, for some reason, but a GPU like that performance, it would be impossible to be not CUDA supported.

Wikipedia page here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CUDA

says MX150 is supported. The MX150 Nvidia Website also shows it's CUDA supported. The support page hasn't updated it, for some reason.

There's also a forum in nvidia similar like this: https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/1023574/announcements/cuda-toolkit-9-is-not-available-in-geforce-mx150/

They confirm that CUDA Toolkit 9.1 version and above works.
