Nope. Default drivers are indeed opensource, but to old to load on vega.

open source RAVEN drivers

It's called amdgpu.

Yes and no. You need nomodeset first time, but changing boot params in def/grub wouildn't change system stability.

You need to:

  • remove "quiet splash" bs from boot params
  • install lastest kernel from ubuntu kernel PPA.
  • install ppa for mesa drivers (Oibaf's is preferable)
  • download and copy up-to-date firmware to /lib/firmware/amdgpu/

As for today kernel 4.20 loads without any troubles and out of the box.

Yes, the AMD RAVEN is indeed amdgpu but they are not specifically for mobile versions. Mine works fine without oibaf I use default drivers that come with 18.04.1 LTS and latest 4.20 kernel.

Without up-to-date mesa you miss 20-30% boost of performance in minecraft on heavy loaded modpack.

DOOM 2016 in proton mode (steam) with vulkan render gets double fps.

But anyway its better than crappy performance under win10.

I am planning to buy this model for cad applications such as solidworks, CATIA, ANSYS and MATLAB. Will this laptop able to fullfill my need? Or I should buy i5 8th gen with Nvidia drivers ? The budget is tight.

Dear guys!
I am fine with Ubuntu 18.10 now.
I have the latest version of mesa drivers (oibaf's) and kernel 4.20 without any troubles.

I am wondering:
1). What is the need to remove "quiet splash" bs from boot params and
2). Why and how download and copy up-to-date firmware to /lib/firmware/amdgpu/...
Is there any guide to do that?

Thanks a lot for your help!

Doesn't affect stability, just for information at boot time.

I have experienced some deadlocks while loading old firmware during boot.

Guide to copy files? Thats pretty obvious IMO))  [If not, use sudo thunar from console]

Don't forget to 'update-grub'

http://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git

You will be needing git to clone this.

git clone --depth=1 git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git

Re: Ideapad 330 Ryzen 5 2500u underperforming

Having followed all the instructions, I am very pleased.

The laptop is very fast and cold with ubuntu 18.10.

I have the latest mesa drivers and Kernel 4.20.
The only problem I have found is that refuses to wake up after it goes into a state of suspension.

There is no way to wake up but to shut down with the power button.

Is there any idea to solve the problem?

Thats strange.

I'll check in the evening for my setup to go suspended and back. (I dont use suspension at all, just prefet turning off.)
