Ynt: Ideapad 330 Ryzen 5 2500u underperforming

2019-09-12, 12:24 PM

Is there a difference between 3500U and 2500U? The 3500U Vega 8 core clock has been upgraded to 100MHz. What is the estimated FPS between them? The 2500U processors are said to have a low voltage problem. It is said that it does not have a 3500U processor.

Would you recommend a laptop with a 2500U + Radeon 540 or 3500U Vega 8? Which makes sense?

I wouldn't recommend a weak GPU like the Radeon 530 or Radeon 540 at all. If you don't game too much, I wouldn't go for the additional GPU. I never actually heard about a "low voltage problem" and I am not experiencing any issues with my laptop besides the cr*ppy WiFi module, but that is the WiFi modules fault.

The only advantage with the discrete GPU would be that it has its own thermal limits and doesn't tax the iGPU too hard during gaming, which leads to more stable framerates. Considering the power limits, the device would actually attain lower results than mine when yours actually is 15 Watts (you can share a screenshot of the STAPM value with us if you want) and mine is 20 Watts. The iGPU can use up quite a lot of energy, so that is based on the cooling and the long-time STAPM limit, but less on the just 100 MHz itself.

I didn't get the answer. Is the Vega 8 3500U or the Radeon 540? I don't feel the low power limitation when I play with the Radeon 540.

This refers to the Vega 8 as that uses the SoCs power limits. The Radeon 540 uses its own power limit, thus it doesn't constrain the GPUs speed.

OK. 2500U + Radeon 540 users will consider the message. How many hours of battery use with 2500U processor?

Without especially going for a low power consumption or saving much, my Yoga 530 with the 2500U, a 1080p display and a 45Wh battery lasts me 3-4 hours on one charge, no matter what I do (I don't play games on it, just to clarify that). During gaming, no laptop lasts as long as this.

It normally takes 3 to 4 hours. However, the battery runs out quickly while watching movies or videos. Is this normal?

Based on the resolution, yes. If you watch 4K movies, for example, the hardware decoder has to work hard. My fan ramps up, for example, because it is really taxing on the hardware.

Screen resolution 720p. I have an LED panel. Watching videos at 720p resolution. Fan sound is operating at normal speed while watching video. The battery runs out faster than normal use. (Watching videos)

SHWAT, thank you for posting this helpful info!

For some reason, after I proceed with applying settings from the Ryzen Controller, after a reboot and restarting the laptop, it reverts back to the default settings. And for some reason, although I'm able to get into the Ryzen Controller, I don't actually see the program installed and all the Ryzen Controller files in the "AppData" hidden folder are simply files that have no ability for me to open on their own...unless I go through the actual program install again to bring me into the Ryzen Controller.

Would you mind offering any insight you might have to help? TIA!
