Re: Ideapad 720S-14IKB fan noise/cycling

2018-07-19, 16:05 PM

Hi again! After chating with Polish Lenovo Support team I was redirected to technical support with my video and audio records. They confirmed that there is a issue with that fan noise and after first email adviced me to install last bios version and send me two extra link with a some drivers (I don't know if I can share with you as admin of the forum edited my previous post and delete attachment). After installing those drivers the problem still persist. I replied back and they send me a recovery instruction and told if that would not help I should send laptop for diagnostic.

Thanks for the update Paper Tape. Please let us know if the recovery instructions work.

Mine has been much better after I set the power settings to Passive but still, the fans are coming on from about the mid 50s temperature.

Just wanted to chime in: I purchased this computer today. I had read online about the fan noise but saw that there was at least somewhat of a solution (decreasing maximum power settings). But holy cow  was I not prepared for how loud and constant this fan is. The power setting solution didn't seem to help; there are moments of quiet, but I would say the fan is going at full bore for 60% of the time I've been using the computer (the last two hours or so). It's really a shame, because otherwise this seems like almost the perfect laptop for me. Fortunately, the store I bought the computer from has a two week return policy. I'll try it out the next few days but if the fan noise persists, I'm going to have to return it.

Maximum prcesor sets at 98 % under windows  totally calms down the funs, but You get half efficiency and its noticeable even when You do simple tasks as web browsing.

Re: Ideapad 720S-14IKB fan noise/cycling

Since my post yesterday, I've made a few changes that seem to have an effect (with the caveat that I've only used the computer for a few hours since the changes and haven't tried anything super CPU intensive). The first thing I did, as mentioned above, was change the maximum and minimum processor power settings, but that didn't seem to have much of an effect. I think disabled OneDrive, which seemed to immediately cause the fan quiet down. I also updated Windows and removed the bloatware than came with the computer. Finally, as mentioned in another thread about this issue, I downloaded this fan control software: https://github.com/hirschmann/nbfc/releases and set my fan speed to 75%. (edit: note, I used the config for Lenovo Yoga 2 13).

As I said, my fan has been generally whisper quiet since doing all those things in a few hours of use. Unfortunately, I sort of did them all at the same time so I'm not sure which step had the greatest effect. I may try undoing each one at a time to see if that makes the fan start spinning up again. If I figure it out, I'll post a follow-up.

This fan control program  the only thing it does  is just disactivating boost , the same way as windows does  with max 98 % ,  that  is why  fan stays more stable and I must admit  almost totally silnet . Your laptop works now with max procesor speed 1,8 GHZ , WIth a such low  speed there is much more cheapar and  portable   laptops on the market .

If I had an  oportunity , I would just   send it back .

Hi again to everyone. Short recall - I'm a dude who is in contact with this issue with lenovo support. So all of you remember my previous post about that recovery - DDRS, that everyone can do it but will lost all data of course. I cannot test that advice from lenovo support, but what I did yestarday I had another SSD and installed Windows 10 Edu edition, totally brand new installation like another dude fwe posts above. I let windows to install evrthing what is needed - nothing from lenovo web page or any exe files. So clean installation with automatioc windows driver istalling, and.... nothing, same s**t. All the same. F*** pulsing fan noise when scrolling facebook feed. So support told me that there is only option now - send leptop to sevice. And I cannot do that right now, I don't have other laptop to work on it.

I don't know where you're getting the 50% efficiency number from, peteros. I just ran a benchmarking tool (the "Home" benchmark from PC Mark 8) three times. Once with everything at 100% and no fan controlling program (A), once with with no fan controlling program but the maximum processor power set to 98% (B), and one with the maximum processor power set to 100% but the fan controlling program set to 75% (C). My benchmark scores were:

A) 2576

B) 2474

C) 2488.

Not too much difference with either the processor power or fan control; in general, those were a loss of about 3 - 4% effeciency. Certainly not ideal, but manageable and likely unnoticable for most every day tasks.
