Re: Ideapad 720S-14IKB fan noise/cycling

2018-01-25, 17:00 PM

Hi!

I got my Ideapad 720S today and I was so happy until i booted it...

The fan noise is really irritating and very noisy!

I paid a lot of money for the 8.Generation i7 config - almost couldn't afford it...

And now this fan noise - seriously... I just wanna cry... :(

I can't take this to my courses at the University, it's too loud!!

Lenovo please, BIOS Update or something!! I don't wanna send it back :(

That solution disables Turbo Boost entirely, making your computer hopelessly slow in single-threaded workloads. It's not a good solution.

Did anyone find a solution yet? Just talked with their support and they told me to restore it back to factory. Already tried with new bios (V1.02 15.09.2017) and didnt help.

Yeah, got an RMA ticket from Lenovo--going to send it in when I have some time.  I'm guessing they'll swap the fan/heatsink array.  Hope they start manufacturing them without this defect.  Fan speed is one thing (and can be fixed via a BIOS update), high pitches whistling or squeals from the fan array is quite another.  The 7th gen processor model had the same issue but it wasn't nearly as pronounced.  It's surprising that the fans would run faster, since the CPU runs around the same temps and the GPU actually runs cooler than the 940mx.

I have also this problem with 720S-14KID TYPE: 81BD with atheros WLAN

And I noticed that on high 5ghz network load fan gets crazy HI - LOW in cycle 5-10 sec

I bet that sensor on wlan card interrupts automatic fan control by motherboard driver

Yeah, the fan cycling could most likely be fixed with a BIOS update (Lenovo, c'mon)...but there's still that high pitched whistling noise that been reported.  I did a little troubleshooting and that's most definitely the fan motor running at higher speeds.  If my RMA doesn't fix it, I'll probably look into manually swapping the fan motor in the machine--Looking at my old (disassembled) macbook pro fans, it looks like both the motor and fan blades can be removed after opening the fan enclosure.  I can think of no reason why a different fan motor (Lenovo or otherwise) wouldn't work as long as it uses the same 4 pin connector.

Re: Ideapad 720S-14IKB fan noise/cycling

I sent mine in to Lenovo and got the "Tech couldn't repoduce the issue"...translated to, we don't think it's an issue.  Lenovo keeps saying to enable "silent mode", but last time I was in the BIOS, I saw no such option.  Furthermore, I'm sure it throttles the cpu like the processor power management work around.  Lat time I benchmarked it on XTU (high settings), I noticed that it was power limit throttling when boosting.

Anyway, when I get it back I'm going to try modifying the fans myself (replace them with some 4-pin ASUS UB fans or something--hopefully that will deal with the high pitched noise), but we definitely need a BIOS for the fan cycling and proessor power management.
