Re: Ideapad 720S-14IKB fan noise/cycling

Hey, I also tried out the tweak with Notebook Fan Control.
Yes, the Notebook stays quiet now but when the fan is supposed to run at full speed it only runs at 10% for me.

So I am now scared that I will damage my Laptop when it is not cooling properly.
You can try it out by setting the critical temperature to a low 35 degrees Celsius and just listen whether the fans actually run at full speed. For me it unfortunately doesnt really work. Maybe there is another EC built in our Laptops?

Anyways, I would like to hear of your experiences!

I don't know if it's been mentioned here yet, but the fans can be controlled with the program NoteBook FanControl and the "Lenovo Ideapad 710S" profile. I only run one fan at 3.3% (Real 8-10%). The device always stays cool and very quiet. The fans can also be turned off completely.

I also set the core, GPU and cache voltages to -0.150,4 V with ThrottleStop and made other smaller settings. Thus it runs even cooler and more economically.

After a long search finally a device with enough power for me and fan control. Maybe it is also possible for the 14 inch.

Sadly that profile doesn't work for the 14 inch model.

If I get enough time I plan on writing my own profile. There are some guides out there on how to monitor and then modify the ECs.

Here is what I did... cancelled my order as Lenovo clearly doesn't want my business.

I bought the Lenovo Ideapad 720s 14IKB-81BD a couple of days ago second hand assuming I'm getting a huge bargain, but was really disappointed by the fact of this noise fan thing that's bugging all of us.

Tried the Intel Thermal stuff which really didn't do much difference, but the clean installation of Windows 10 seemed to have a huge effect on how the fans behave. Tried the Windows Refresh app mentioned here earlier, but it failed so I went ahead and did it through a USB stick.

It's not perfect don't get me wrong, but at least the fans don't cycle ALL the time.

Thanks for all the effort you guys have put into this issue even though Lenovo doesn't seem to give a crap about us.

I have pretty much fixed my fan from coming on all the time and being very loud. My laptop is now whisper quiet most of the time. The only time the fan really kicks in and it gets loud is when the CPU goes into turbo boost mode. My CPU averages around 40 degrees Celsius. Below is what I did. 1. Clean install of Windows followed by installing all of the drivers from the support page for this laptop 2. Used Throttlestop to undervolt to -105 on CPU core and cache 3. Used Throttlestop to enable speed shift epp The clean install of Windows helps a lot but the addition of Throttlestop helps even more. At the end of the day this laptop is a pretty high performance machine in a small and light form factor so cooling is always going to be a problem and the need for the fans to ramp up will always be there. However, the out of the box behavior is annoying. But just a few steps makes is tolerable.

I did somethng much easier...considering it was up to Lenovo to do all the things you did before they shipped me the laptop...I returned it and bought something else.

LenovoFirst:  Thanks for posting that about using Throttlestop.  I used the same settings and cpu runs about 40C as well.  I also reset registry to allow changes to cpu frequency, setting at 2200MHz at the moment.  The process that seems to make the fans kick on is the Windows Defender Antimalware service,.

So, I swear that an update several months ago solved the fan problem for me. It was quiet and normal for MONTHS. Now, since the computer updated last, it has been going again. So frustrating!!! Has this happened to anyone else?
