Re: Ideapad 720S-14IKB fan noise/cycling

2018-03-17, 16:10 PM

So a couple things.

The solutions that the Lenovo support person posted in response to reviewers are complete bogus:

1.  BIOS:  there is no "silent/quiet mode" in the current BIOS v. for the 720s 8th gen processor.

2.  The updated BIOS link that she posted in response to another reviewer was for a different product (the 7th gen model) and is not compatible with the 8th gen processors.

I tried oiling the fan spindle, bur that did not reduce the noise.  I have some cheap ASUS fans coming in the mail and will see if they produce the same high-pitched noise when connected to the fan connectors.

I like the laptop, but I've never had such bad tech support--providing the wrong BIOS, not acknowledging the issue, telling users to use a mode that doesn't exist for their model--that's pretty unacceptable.  It's not Razer bad, but still shows that for all of their goodwill, the supports reps don't necessarily have a basic understanding of the product they're trying to help users troubleshoot with.  I'm currently using the "set the processor to 98%" work-around, but it's only a temp fix as any moderately demanding program will be throttled without the turbo boost.

@KQvestion: for the 720S-13 you even don't get an answer at all, even though they limited the CPU to 1,5 GHZ in the lasted bios, which makes the notebook somehow more quite... but still the fans starts crying at 40°...

I know better (7th Gen, Yoga720) the quite mode helps...

Is there a working NBFC config for the 720S-14?

I'm having the exact same issue but on a 520s-14. Apparently the fan kicks in at high speed as soon as the processor hits 40C (which is kinda low).

Same issue with may ideapd 720s 13, with i7 8th generation. The problem is not a high fan speed (I updated the latest BIOS), but the annoying constant high sound. Not very loud and starting at about 42° . Otherwise a perfect laptop, I just switched after 10 years of using Macbooks

@KQvestion: Did you already change the fan anddid it solve the problem? Thanks for sharing.

Got the new laptop (Ideapad 720S 8th gen i7). Fan noise is unbearable. If at least it was constant it would'nt be as irritating. Deal breaker right here for anyone thinking to buy this laptop. Lenovo, how many customers with that problem does it take to get it fixed ?

Re: Ideapad 720S-14IKB fan noise/cycling

My $6 "test fans" didn't seem to work--despite the same voltage/wattage.  I'm considering trying to replace the fan blades from the metal to plastic ones.  The fans definitely strike me as low quality and the main culprit in addition to the BIOS.  The ramping and high pitched noise don't kick in until around 45-50 C.  This is ridiculous.  I should not have to crack open a new laptop and literally mod the fans (which requires also removing the heatsink and repasting the cpu and gpu) to fix this.  Lenovo needs to update the BIOS and do a recall on the fans of this model.  Oiling the fans didn't reduce the noise at all either.  I Suspect it's mostly the BIOS, because I had the old 720s (7th gen) and sold it to a friend before buying this one.  While fan cycling was an issue, it wasn't nearly as bad...and the temps weren't any different.

+1 here. I have this same fan problem with 720s 81bd. I even had the fans kick into high gear when I was looking at the settings in bios.

I've been checking here and the driver update page almost every day waiting for a fix. Otherwise I like the laptop.

Hi! I've got the same problems.

Since it looks like no one from Lenovo is looking into this problem, I posted a link on their Facebook Page and also wrote them via Messenger, that they should go look in their own forum and help us.

I really hope, that they'll finally help us...

I would encourage people looking at a solution to make an account and post here. The more voice we get, the more chances we will have to get it fix. This thread already have thousands of views. It speaks for itself. Tx.
