Re: Ideapad 720S-14IKB fan noise/cycling

This is increasingly saddening...

While we are all sharing the same problems (and even resorting to things that compromise performance with varying success) Lenovo didn't post a single response as far as I know.

I agree. So far, posting in this forum didn't helped at all. It might just not be monitored by Lenovo. This is more demanding, but reaching to them individually would be the next step. I'll have to find the time but I will, so all of you should to.

Edit : I might add that its still worth it for anyone new to post here. That thread still getting bigger and even if no answer from Lenovo, this thread is still something worthy that might take attention at some point.

Hi

Same fan sound issue with my machine as well.

Also, I noticed some crackling sound keeps coming through the earphone.

Hey, I also had a quite noisy fan on my 720s 13IKBR i7. I could send it back to the shop and got a new one. This works perfectly fine now. There was a problem with the fan itself, that produced a constant high sound.

In my case it's a 520S so this is very likely affecting the entire range :(

Even XPS 13 has this issue. Anyone tried to disable  Intel SpeedStep in BIOS?

And if you make a support case they want you to send it in, takes 14 days before you receive it back. And of course they can't find anything wrong with it because it's a BIOS problem... If this isn't be fixed soon this will be my last Lenovo!

Disabling speedstep is the same as setting processor state to 98%--it just disables turboboost which throttles the laptop.  The frequency and noise of the fan cycling is def a BIOS issue, but the high-pitched whining noise is definitely and issue with the fan bearings.  Why Lenovo won't acknowledge this issue is beyond me.  Fixing the BIOS would reduce RMAs.  Fixing the fans would take a bit of effort, but would absolutely be worth it to bolster their service rep (which is in need of that right now).

I was looking a dissasembly and I thought, probably nothing usefull but (I haven't got this model), could be any way to bypass the fan plug? in order to reduce the speed with all kind of settings.

Maybe it's stupid what I'm saying, but I thought in an analog dimmer linke in desktop pc boxes (supposing that temps aren't too high)

Hi All,

I just read through this thread...so disappointing. I was just about to buy the 720s 14" (81BD) but I think I'll hold off for the moment. I'm hoping Lenovo realize this is affecting sales and in turn helps everyone's predicament.

I'm hoping the community will be able to confirm some things for me:

I'm a Linux user; am I correct that the 81BD model is 100% compatible (I prefer Slackware)

The ram on this model is not soldered and it can be upgraded to 16gb down the road

The screen is the same as the model reviewed in 2017 in the following link and does not use PWM:

http://laptopmedia.com/review/lenovo-ideapad-720s-14-inch-review-the-ultraportable-zenbooks-finally-have-a-serious-competition/

I'm really hoping this gets resolved cause the 720s checks all the right boxes as a replacement from my mid 2010 MBP
