Re: Ideapad 720s Battery life is incredibly short

I read reviews all the time about the Battery life, or the lack thereof on laptops, but what about the performance of the CPU and graphics, or even the WiFi when on battery? Is the expectation that the system will performance just as well when on DC or is the expectation that there needs to be a tradeoff between power and performance ?

Does the laptop cooling fan constantly running at high speed (makes noise) or check the frequency, if it is highest for eg. 3.5 GHz? if so the battery will drain in a few hours ~ 2 to 3 hours, but if you change the frequency set to 1.69GHz for battery and turboboost only when connected to power, you can reach the battery life to 8 - 9 hours.

I use Ideapad 720S, my battery lasts atleast 8 hours.

how do you do this?

I think that to achieve this, you can go to the Energy Control Panel in Windows, go to the power plan, edit the advanced options on this and set the maximum CPU power state to a (significantly lower) percentage. This will not only increase battery life, but it also massively decreases performance, to a very noticeable degree, so it's up to you if you want that.

Hey there,
first of all, shame on Lenovo for not configuring their Laptops from the get go so that they are usable.
I have a different 720s model with insane fan noise and also **bleep**ty battery life. But luckily I found out about undervolting which increases performance, lowers heat and prolongs battery life.

It sounds too good to be true but it actually works.

Check out this thread for improving battery life in general: http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/guide-improving-battery-life-on-windows-enabling-deeper-c-states.815602/

For Undervolting you can use this guide: https://www.ultrabookreview.com/31385-the-throttlestop-guide/

My laptop now is finally quiet and I improved my processor speed from a cinebench r20 score of 1064 to 1424.
There certainly is some tinkering involved but it is not THAT complicated. I still wouldn't recommend it if you are a real casual technology user.
But with enough patient Im sure you can also make your Laptop usable again. Good luck with that!
