Re: Ideapad 720s unbearable fan noise

2018-03-24, 11:37 AM

It's a pitty LENOVO didnt fix the problem yet. However the advice given for the Yoga 920 by jeric69 works like a charm: (Message 13 of 34). https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-Yoga-Series-Notebooks/Yoga-920-loud-fan/m-p/3898386

Don't shy away from modifying the windows registry key, using regedit!

Finding the advanced power options in the system might be a bit tricky. First find the power options in the system settings, then towards the bottom of that screen you find the link that gets you to the power options that  jeric69 shows in his article. On that screen change the 100's to 98's; that's it. After device restart it sounds as if the fans have been removed....

Hi! same here, its a new laptop and fans are running all the time. Im so sad I didnt read this before. I can believe such a new computer can do so much noise having almost none applications and tasks to perform.

A solution would be appreciated. I have an Acer swift 3 next to this laptop and no noise AT ALL!

Please Lenovo, do something about this issue.

Registered to forum to add my voice. Ideapad 720S 8th gen i7. Fresh install. Fan noise is all over the place. Not loud, but totally annoying since it just start-stop-start-stop. Definitely can't live with that.

Setting "system cooling policy" to "Passive" helps. Using reduced "processor state" will have no effects without also setting power mode to something other than "best performance" (accessible when you click on the power icon in the notification in the taskbar). You must neuter the laptop if you want quiet.

Re: Ideapad 720s unbearable fan noise [SOLVED]

2018-06-18, 19:04 PM

I've got the 720S 13 IKB 81BV (i7/4K screen) and my fan noise was unbearable. It was not constant but going up and down all the time and just loud. I just needed to open Edge and the fan was about to skyrocket. I played around with changing the max CPU frequency which made things a bit better but at the cost of lower performance.

Finally, I fresh installed a clean Windows 10 from MS, let WIndows do all the updates and DIDN'T install anything from Lenevo. No driver, no additional software, nothing. Windows 10 found ALL necessary drivers itself and voila. Windows needed multiple batches of downloads and installs but eventually got all drivers itself.

Now the fan is quiet and constant. So it doesn't go up and down quickly.

And battery life is ok too. Not great but solid 5 hours. Before it was draining fast because of the skyrocketing fans.

The 720S is now one of the best if not the best notebook I've ever had.

Hey, I just posted something (about how I fresh installed Windows 10 and fans behave well now) and the post was removed. Why?

Re: Ideapad 720s unbearable fan noise

2018-07-06, 19:15 PM

Hi, just want to leave my feedback here.

I have a Ideapad 520s 14" laptop (model 14IKB, it's pretty much a 720s, but with a 14" screen.) I also have the fan noise problem, it's a bit annoying... Specially when im watching netflix at night, in my room. My room is very quiet at night and the fan noise becomes even more noticeable. It's just annoying.

I tried several things, including softwares to edit the fan speed (ig.SpeedFan) and none of these programs worked, my fans are not even detected.

I read that some users did a fresh Windows install and that seems to work. I also tried to do that today but, for some reason, when i access the Bios, i can't set the "boot mode" to legacy or to CSM. I already disabled fast boot and secure boot, doesn't work. The boot mode option has a different color (grey) and i can't select it...Anyone knows why ? My bios is updated.

For everyone who is struggling with the fan noise problem on both 720s and 520s, try to do a fresh OS clean. Don't install any Lenovo drivers, windows update does that already.

Hope it helps, good luck

How has Lenovo not yet commented on this? I'm considering returning my laptop because of this fan issue.

I've tried it all, but the fan in always on. ALWAYS. Even when the computer is completely idle. CPU usage and temps are around 5% and 30C, but the fans are on anyway.

OliverHörberg: Do yourself a favor and return it immediately.

Lenovo already released a refreshed version of these laptops {3,5,7}30 and is yet to post a single response to these fan issue threads.

I'd say there's little to no chance of they fixing this at this point.
