Ideapad Flex 5 14are05 Ryzen 7 no backlit keyboard

2021-06-19, 8:59 AM

Hi everyone, I just bought a refurbished Lenovo Ideapad Flex 5 14are05 with Ryzen 4700u, in the UK (this model: https://www.lenovo.com/gb/en/laptops/ideapad/ideapad-flex-series/IdeaPad-Flex-5-14ARE-05/p/88IPF501453).

Apparently this is the only Flex 5 model without a backlit keyboard, and I couldn't find a single mention of this in any of the reviews I watched prior to the purchase.

Literally every flex 5 model I saw reviewed on the internet comes equipped with a backlit one, so I didn't even doubt it would have it.

My question is: is this model upgradable with a backlit keyboard?

Does anyone in the world have this very model and thought of doing the same?

Where can I find compatible parts?

I opened a ticket on the Lenovo support, they just replied that it doesn't come fit with one, they can't do anything to upgrade it, and they don't recommend disassembling it because of the warranty. So basically no help.

I cant tear it apart purely to check if the motherboard has a port to connect a backlit keyboard, because it would void both the reseller and the Lenovo warranty.

Considering that all the other flex 5 models come with a backlit one, I am confident this one I have should be compatible with at least one of them other keyboards?

Any help/advise regarding this matter is appreciated, I do use the backlit feature a lot and I'm still considering if I should or not return this laptop.

Why did Lenovo even fit only this model with a standard one??

Thanks a lot.

Hi boi87,

Checking the parts lookup image of the motherboard for your  Flex 5-14ARE05 Laptop (ideapad) - Type 81X2 - Model 81X2008NUK do not show any available port for the backlit keyboard connector.

Hi boi87

Have you checked physically on the available connections on your board?

A backlit port should be there and usually it is not available when pre ordered without.

You can share the machine type number / MTM from the sticker to check the board description .

Hi @Dbrix, thanks for your reply.

My machine's serial number is R910LWPW, and the product number 81X2008NUK

I couldn't physically check the motherboard because that would void the warranty.

Anyway, the board model is LNVNB161216.

I think it should have a backlight option though, because in the list of compatible parts for my machine (link here) I can see several palmrest+backlit keyboard options, with both US and UK layout.

For example this:

Upper Case ASM_UK W 81X1 PG
C-cover with keyboard
5CB0Y85365
FRU Only

This makes me wonder why Lenovo would tell me that there is no upgrading options.

Hi boi87,

Did tech support in UK themselves say that warranty is voided if you open it?

You can share the machine type model like 80NYXXXXUK from the sticker so we can check further.

-Dbrix

Hi @Dbrix , yes they said

Unfortunately you wont be able to add backlit keyboard on it. Even if you do it will void your warranty.

The sticker under my machine says

model number = 81X2008NUK

serial number = ********

model name = 81X2

Thanks

Oh ok, so it doesn't really mean anything that there are backlit keyboards as compatible parts?

It's a bit confusing that there are pictures and tons of videos of this laptop model with a backlit keyboard but actually there are also variants without one...

Thanks for clarifying though, I guess there's no hope of fitting one mine then :(

Hi @boi87

I would confirm that some models do offer backlit keyboard option/feature.

Checking on the image and MTM does not show any ports for the backlight on the motherboard as compared to other variants with backlit option/feature.

There is nowhere to connect the cable for the backlit if you purchase the keyboard with backlight.

I hope the responses above helped clarify your query.

Regards.
