Ideapad Flex 5-1570 Extend Display via HDMI

2017-10-16, 21:53 PM

Purchased this 2-1 recently.  Having a constant battle with getting it to recognize an external display connected to the HDMI port.

Test 1 - When I connect a display it does not recognize it.

Test 2 - No displays are discovered when using the feature via right click on dashboard > display > detect.

Test 3 - No displays are discovered or projected to when I use the system tray projection>extend display.

Test 4 - When I go to the intel graphics settings control panel > display > multiple displays > detect, the display is recognized and the desktop is extended.

When I lock the computer and leave it so for more than 3 minutes, the display settings are lost.  Test 4 has to be repeated to extend displays again.

Is there a resolution for this?

I have the exact same problem. I tried two different Lenovo Flex 5 laptops and they both have the same issue.  Allen Lenovo tech support; they had me reinstall the graphics driver=no change. They had me rest the laptop to manufacture original settings = no change.

@Lenovo...... we need some answers or a solution. You are selling a product that doesn’t work.

Tech support told me that Lenovo flex 5 i5 does not support the extend.

They said you can buy a 3 party docking station, but would tell me which one (not much help)  I got a great deal on black friday, but had to take it back.

I love my Old Lenovo, but not sure I can stay with them after this support nightmare.

Contrary to what Lenovo support will tell you, you CAN extend the Lenovo Ideapad Flex 5 laptop to two external monitors, for a total of three monitors: The monitor for the laptop itself and two external monitors. I just accomplished it this weekend. You need a docking station. I used the Targus 110 (model DOCK110USZ), which is cheaper than Targus 171, though the 171 has additional ports and some different types of ports. You put one HDMI cable into the Targus 110 and put the Targus 110 into your laptop via USB 3.0 The other HDMI cable goes into the laptop (just as you would do if you had only one external monitor). I had to fool around with the display settings a bit after (through the right-click menu on your desktop), because at first, it would only let me extend from the laptop to one external monitor. I was afraid at this point all hope was lost, but by playing around with the settings (can't remember exactly how I did this, but message me if you'd like me to try to help you more), I got it to work. Please see this post, as Abe saved the day for me.

The Targus adapter is not easily available. Any other options? I need to do the same

Re:Ideapad Flex 5-1570 Extend Display via HDMI

I was lucky enough to be able to find a Targus 110 on Amazon which was used but good and bought it to see if I could make this work.

YES!!!! it does work.  Still, Lenovo should have made it so that the video can be communicated over the USB-C and not just data.

It was, in my opinion, NOT good that they chose to NOT make the video over USB-C work.  Will double think the next time I CONSIDER another Lenovo product.

In the past, it was never a question or concern.  NOW it  is.  Come on Lenovo, use common sense or you are likely to lose more customers!

My solution is the same as what michael1099 indicated.

Here's the setup with a few more details:

Use the Targus 110.  There may be other devices out there that might work but that will be an experiment, unfortunately.

Also, my original Lenovo Warranty is over and because I bought my Lenovo at Costco with the Costco Visa card, I get a total of 4 years of warranty but I am not exactly sure what that covers.  I doubt that I can still get technical assistance for that but should check.

  1.  Connect the Targus 110's USB-3 to the Lenovo USB-3 port.
  2. Connect one HDMI cable to the HDMI port on the Lenovo and the other end of the HDMI cable to one external monitor.
  3. Connect a 2nd HDMI cable to the HDMI port on the  Targus 110 and the other end of that HDMI cable to the 2nd external monitor.
  4. Connect your ethernet cable to the ethernet port on the Targus 110, unless you are using your wireless connectivity for internet access.
  5. Use the windows key + "P" (upper case p) to select to extend the display
  6. Right click on your desktop and select Display settings.
    1. Click on the "Detect" button.  You should now see 3 displays there:  1.  Laptop screen, 2.  1 of the external monitors, 3.  The other external monitor.
    2. You can click on "Identify" to see which is which.

Were you able to find an equivalent?  I am unable to locate this targus adapter anywhere, new or used.  I would like to be able to attach 2 extra monitors to my lenovo laptop but finding it difficult.  it attaches one just fine, it duplicates the third monitor to the second.  Frustrating
