Ideapad RAM upgrade questions

2021-07-10, 15:01 PM

Hi All,

I have Ideapad 700 15ISK. Presently it has 16 Gb RAM (2 x 8GB SODIMM 260pin installed).
I would like to upgrade memory to 32 Gb. I have got several questions.
Maybe these questions have been already discussed in this forums, but looks like I did not find any direct answers.

a) Does notebook require both memory slots to be filled, or it can work with one slot.
In other words, should I buy 2 x 16Gb SODIMM, or I can buy 1 x 32 Gb SODIMM?

b) If both slots are filled, should they be filled only with SODIMM with the same capacity, or
we can use different SODIMMs (e.g. 8Gb + 16Gb)?

c) According to documentation notebook supports at most 32Gb RAM.
Does anyone tried to install more memory? What was the effect? Is there a chance that documentation is outdated and
the notebook can handle more than 32Gb of RAM?

Thanks in advance
Ruben

Hi there,

a) Yes, you can use just one slot.  I personally would recommend doing 2 x 16GB so that you can utilize a dual-channel configuration (more on that here: https://www.crucial.com/articles/about-memory/what-is-dual-channel-memory)

b) You can use memory with different capacities, but again circling back to the dual-channel discussion, I would recommend having two memory sticks with the same size, frequency, and specifications.

c) Lenovo's documentation only lists the maximum amount of RAM that they tested as a SKU... it's very possible that more RAM could work (in fact, for the Intel chipset the 700 15-inch uses, it lists a maximum of 64GB).  The only way to know would be to try this or know someone with this machine that has tried this; unfortunately, I don't have the ideapad 700.

So in summary, for the best possible performance, I would recommend two RAM sticks of the same size, frequency, and manufacturer.  You can mix and match memory sticks or only use one slot at a time but that could impact performance.

Hope that helps.

Eric Xu
