Ideapad S340 dual monitor setup will not work

2019-08-22, 17:38 PM

Hello all,

I recently got a new Ideapad S340.  The product number is 81QG0002US.  It only has one HDMI port and no other options for external displays.  Thus, I got a USB-C docking station to see if it would work.  I have tried 3 different ones and none of them work.   I installed / updated, drivers, etc.  They won't ever detect the display.  Is there any known option that will work for this?  I asked Lenovo directly and they said that this model does not support Displayport Alt Mode so I am thinking that may be the problem.  If so, is there any other option?  I got this one during their sale so I got it much cheaper but I cannot imagine that a retail Lenovo $750 laptop could not support dual monitors when a $400 Dell can.

Thanks for any  help

There is no other option in your case. There are so-called USB to HDMI converters but I wouldn't trust them, and they also just mirror one screen, leaving you inable to use both outputs at the same time, you are really limited to one.

Yes, Lenovo was right. Barely any of their devices supports the Displayport Alt Mode, so a docking station with video outputs will be of no use on the device.

This helped me too

Thank you for the quick reply!  Looks like I will be canning this one and going back to a Dell.

When you have use cases for dual-monitor setups, sure, that would be the best idea.

Might I ask what exact Dell laptop around the 400$ mark you are having that support Displayport Alt Mode?

It's not true. The S340 series officially supports Display Alt Mode in accordance with the user manual (in all languages) for the USB-C port.

S540/330S/530S NOT support usb-c video output, but S340 support.

And psref.lenovo.com lied about the HDMI port. This is not version 1.4b, but 2.0b for the AMD series with Ryzen (Vega GPU).
It’s just a marketing ploy to sell Intel versions series that really don’t have HDMI 2.0b, unlike Ryzen versions series. Thus, buyers of versions with Intel are deprived of support for video output with 4k@60Hz for 4k monitors, tv and projectors. And not only that, they are devoid of HDR output. And they pay more for Intel versions..

Stack into the same problem.

Solved with extrenal USB to HDMI converters: old (2017) Wavlink USB 3.0 to 4K HDMI External Multi Monitor Graphics Adapter (got from Amazon a while ago).

Display extended on all connected monitors (3) norlmally, not just mirrored.

PS It's sad to not able to use my USB-C Hub's HDMI port...
