Betreff: Ideapad S340 dual monitor setup will not work

2019-12-03, 14:34 PM

Connected directly.

Connection through usbc hub works too, but for some strange reasons windows refuse connect to WiFi network in that case... 8-/

I use this hub: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07RWG8M15

It's not true. The S340 series officially supports Display Alt Mode in accordance with the user manual (in all languages) for the USB-C port.

S540/330S/530S NOT support usb-c video output, but S340 support.

It is true that the manual for the S340 series says:

Your computer supports the following video resolution, if the external display also supports that resolution.

...

the USB-C connector or the Mini DisplayPort connector Up to 3840 x 2160 pixels / 60 Hz

However, I have a S340-14IWL, and DisplayPort output from the USB-C port doesn't work (the same monitor and cable work for a colleague's ThinkPad, so it isn't a bad cable or anything). When I connect the cable, I get a notification "USB device not recognized", and in the device manager it shows up as "Unknown USB Device (Port Reset Failed)". After a while I get a second notification "Display connection might be limited: Make sure that the DisplayPort device that you're connected to is supported by your PC". The monitor is a iiyama PL2592 with a built-in display port; nothing exotic in terms of resolution, and as I said it works fine with other PCs

It looks to me that the user manual is not telling the truth here, and the only possibility for an externally connected display is via the HDMI port or through a USB 3.0 port with an adapter. Either that, or the S340 only works with a very restricted range of monitors over USB-C, but if that is the case, where is the list?

Betreff: Ideapad S340 dual monitor setup will not work

Was just on the way to buy the S340 but the dealer told me that the S340 does not support Alternate Mode - so I can not connect a docking station to have 2 Monitors to work.

In the user manual it says that the USB-C supports Display Mode but in real it is not the case !

Lenovo - what now ? Which Docking Station can I connect to work with 2 external Displays (in extended mode) ?

I´d like to us an icy box but it seems that they need an USB C with display alternatMode (like most other docks, too..)

Which Dock is working with the S340 ?

Most notebooks that don't support Alt-mode you can use a DisplayLink USB adapter (or docking station) for often less than $50 like this one by Wavlink >> www.amazon.com/dp/B01CSG7TUC
There are many of them for both USB type-A and type-C connectors.
The product should say something like "Displaylink chip" or "Displaylink certified".

S340 has no advanced mode (user manual tells something other but that is wrong). On the right siede you can see "SS USB" - 3.1 V.1 - that means it it fast but without Video information.

I change to Lenovo Thinkbook - it hat USB C 3.1 V2 which supports "Alt mode"...

Advanced mode is irrelevant. My post above about Displaylink adapters answers the OP of how to make dual-monitor work with an Ideapad S340. Buying a different, more expensive, notebook of course is an option but it's not an answer for people who already own a S340 or is thinking of buying one - but think it's not possible to use two monitors.  Unfortunatly the person who responded "There is no other option in your case." gave you incorrect information I think.   And Displaylink products appear to have been designed specifically to solve this problem --> "...does not support Alternate Mode - so I can not connect a docking station to have 2 Monitors to work."

OK. But the "solution" for this is still potentially misleading for people with an S340 or looking to buy one. The real solution is a Displaylink adapter.  It's the same for me with an 330S and a huge number of other Ideapad models.

Exactly. To which I would add that information in the user manual that is flat-out wrong is a big fat fail for Lenovo, whether or not there is another way of connecting multiple monitors to this laptop.
