Intermittent fingerprint scanner issues on Windows 1903

2019-09-03, 11:04 AM

Hello,

I have an Ideapad 720s-14ikb and this issue has been annoying me for quite some time now:

Any Windows version above 1703 (factory installed Windows version on this laptop) fails to start the fingerprint with Code 10 on device manager (screenshot attached). I'm currently running Windows 10 Build 1903 and the scanner fails intermittently (works sometimes, some other times it doesn't).

On build 1703 it all works fine, but the subsquent windows versions are much better and bring some features that I really need for a productive workflow.

Here are a few things already done:

  • Forbid Windows from installing drivers through Windows update by enabling a group policy called "Do not include drivers with Windows Update" under gpedit.msc;
  • Cleared the TPM (through tpm.msc);
  • BIOS and all other driver updates present on the Lenovo Support page have been done and Vantage says there are no more updates available.

I've sent the computer in for Lenovo but all they did was erase & reinstall windows as there were no hardware issues present (this left me without a computer for 2 weeks, all for nothing as the problem just comes back as soon as the Windows version is upgraded).

My question here is: This issue has been reported several times by many users here and across other forums, but it's been almost 1 year and there's still no word from Synaptics or Lenovo as to when a fully compatible and certified driver is to be expected, this is beyond ridiculous and I sincerely can't understand what's taking so long.

Let's get the discussion going, all 720s owners feel free to comment with your own advice.

I'll go ahead and do that just to be sure :) Thanks! I'll report back if the issue returns.

I spoke with Lenovo Support chat on Facebook and they told me to disable a setting under 'Advanced System Properties' -> Device Installation Settings. I did this but once again the issue has come back, this is seriously starting to annoy me and the fact that Lenovo isn't helping at all isn't contributing towards my overall satisfaction with this product due to the poor driver support coming from Lenovo.

Please find attached a screenshot of the issue I'm having with the fingerprint as well as some other issue which I just noticed with Bluetooth A2DP...

The best option for the Bluetooth issue should be re-installing or updating the Bluetooth driver.

Also, if you want to hinder Lenovo Vantage from inadvertently updating the drivers from the fingerprint scanner to a non-working version, you should go to its update settings and disable automatic updates of critical and recommended drivers alike.

Bluetooth problem is fixed... just a small hickup from Windows. In regards to Lenovo Vantage I went ahead and disabled the driver updates... but that's not going to make any changes... do you have a 720s? If so, what version of Windows are you running? Is your fingerprint sensor working?

In case you don't know how to check the Windows version you're running, press the Windows Key + R and type in 'winver' followed by return to check.

I own a Yoga 530 which also uses the Synaptics WBDi sensor, but with Windows 10 1809 due to the WiFi drivers from literally no other Windows version or even the Lenovo webpage working. I never had problems and the driver is from the end of June 2018 (version 5.5.2731.1050).

Can you please check the Hardware ID of your fingerprint sensor? Synaptics WBDI is a series of fingerprint sensors so yours may not be exactly the same as mine.

I checked it, it is literally the same, including the REV0164.

USB\VID_06CB&PID_0081&REV_0164

In that case I would presume the driver is incompatible with Windows 10 on the devices like yours.

Right, I mean it's so annoying and what's really p*ssing me off is the fact that if I take this in for a 3rd time in the retail store I purchased it from they'll deny a refund or replacement because it's a software issue, I'll try either way, but having paid over 1000 euros for this computer and not being able to use it to it's full capabilities is very sad... *rolls eyes at Lenovo & Synaptics*
