Lenovo 3i Gaming Storage Upgrade

2020-10-28, 13:12 PM

Hello. I would like to upgrade my laptop with additional storage. The specifications indicate the following:

Up to 2 drives (one HDD and M.2 SSD):

● HDD / SATA 6.0Gb/s, 2.5" wide, 7mm high

● M.2 2242 SSD / PCIe NVMe, PCIe 3.0 x 4

● M.2 2280 SSD / PCIe NVMe, PCIe 3.0 x 4

While I already have one M.2 2280 storage installed, does this mean I can only install one 2.5" HDD?  Is it possible to install the M.2 2242 SSD in lieu of the 2.5" HDD? If able to install the M.2 2242 SSD, does the port allow dual SSD thickness?

Hi NakMuayman,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

There are possible variants that is offered with both HDD SATA and PCIe SSD m.2 storages.

Some are with the m.2 SSD alone.

I suggest that you share the machine type model / MTM (ex. 81C70000RK) from the sticker as it would help us detail more about your machine variant.

This would allow us to check if there are available m.2 ports to use if you have not checked it physically.

Update us soon as convenient.

Regards

Hi NakMuayman,

As shown by the image of the board for ideapad Gaming 3-15IMH05 Laptop - Type 81Y4 - Model 81Y4001HUS shows possible m.2 port for PCIe NVMe 2242 up to 1TB SSD.

This same port is an option for you to add a m.2 PCie sssd as describerd here in the hardware manual page 32.

Regards

Thank you for your response, however, I am received conflicting information from Lenovo live chat support regarding this question. They suggested that I am only able to utilize the 2.5"HDD while the m.2 port for PCIe NVMe 2280 is occupied. In theory, I am in agreement with your suggestion, but I would really appreciate confirmation of both m.2 ports for PCIe NVMe (2280 & 2242) being utilized by someone else in the forum.

The above does not indicate that there are two m.2 slots.  Per the HMM that Spidey linked there is one m.2 slot that can take either size m.2 SSD depending on where the stand-off is located.

Yes, you're right. I apologize for the confusing question on my part.   What I meant to ask is that there also appears to be an additional M.2 port with a shorter standoff location that is not included as part of the specification; maybe for a 2230?  Does anyone know of this can be used in addition to the other m.2 slot?

Hi NakMuayman,

If you have not checked it physically, there is only one m.2 storage with 2242 SSD on it as shown in the image above.

Only option to add storage is with 2.5 SATA 7mm HDD/SSD.

Your ideapad Gaming 3-15IMH05 Laptop - Type 81Y4 - Model 81Y4001HUS have currently PN 5SS0W76178 (UMIS AM620 512G PCIe 2242 SSD) on the slot (the yellow box on the image).

This means that you can accommodate additional 2.5 ,5400,7mm,SATA HDD or SATA SSD. Yours already have the bracket so you just need a cable (PN 5C10S30065 HDD Cable L 81Y4 HDD/B).

Here is the video aside from the hardware manual (page 34).

Regards
