Re: Lenovo Ideapad 330s -14IKB(Type 81F4) RAM upgrade suggestion

No, it would not be overheating or causing any problem, the BIOS just might not detect it because it hasn't been programmed to take advantage of more than an 8GB stick. We also couldn't possibly say why they list that as compatible. Maybe they tested it themselves beyond the Lenovo specs, but all we can do is guess why they listed it and what would happen if you tried that. But one thing is certain, it should not be overheating as the memory controller sits on the CPU chip and is thus limited to maximum 15 watts overall power consumption for the chip overall, so it couldn't draw excessive amounts of power.

Exactly.
I've had already think the BIOS matter. But 76 (right? or 96? don't remember) euros is too much for just testing.
Updating the BIOS is the first step, and because of what you describe about the memory controller etc, there would be any dysfunction, so there would be any problem of using 20GB RAM, but... I prefer let Lenovo do the test :)

Yup, it's a little expensive just for testing. ;)

You could throw in an 8GB stick for sure, though. If you want more RAM, go that route.

16GB RAM module should work.  I would try it first before changing the BIOS, which has some risk.
I already posted various times about 20GB total, see my post history:

I received the ram from Crucial but the chip looked bent or damaged anyway. I installed the thing anyway but the computer never booted. Black screen...

I had do a bios update but everything remain the same. Black screen.

I will probably go for another ram from some other manufacturer and definitely not from online shop... And I will post an update. :)

I installed a WD Blue 1tb in my 330s 14-IKB (81F40096MB) and it works perfectly fine.
