Lenovo Ideapad 510s fastest memory speed

2017-03-28, 4:07 AM

Wondering what RAM modules people have upgraded their Lenovo Ideapad 510s (80UV001BUS) with. Looks like it only has one slot and is only upgradeable to 16GB. What about speed and latency? Crucial has different speeds and latency listed.

It has ones at 2133MHz, 2400MHz and 2666Mhz and latencies from 15, 16 and 17. Only a $14 difference between their cheapest 2133MHz and their most expensive 2666MHz.

Newegg sells other modules at the 2666MHz speed that Crucial says is the max that seem compatible. Patriot Viper 16GB DDR4 2666 PV416G266C8S at CL18 and HyperX Impact 16GB DDR4 2666 HX426S15IB2/16 at CL15. The numbers make the HyperX look like the best for this laptop with it being $14 more than Crucial's fastest module. Newegg also has 2800MHz and 3000MHz offerings too. Does this chipset support those speeds? The 2800MHz being made by Patriot and the 3000MHz made by G.SKILL. The latency on the G.SKILL module is CL16, so pretty good but considerably more expensive. $27 more than Crucial's fastest and $13 more than HyperX's fastest and its on sale right now (retails at $180.99). Whats the fastest RAM the Intel HM170 chipset can support and will this laptop allow it? Intel shows that the i7-7500U supports up to 32GB memory size and DDR4-2133, LPDDR3-1866, DDR3L-1600 memory types, yet Crucial says it can support 2666MHz, feeling confused.

My main goal is to push how much this laptop can run modern 3D games as well as play high quality 1080p blu ray rips and digital copies. Any hope of the prices of these modules to come down? I know DDR4 is relatively new, so I don't want to buy now only to see prices drop by half next year.

Your safest bet is to buy the ram that specifically matches the requirements of your CPU. So, if I looked up your specs correcty, you have the Intel Core i7-7500U 2.7 GHz; therefore, you should buy the DDR4-2133 speed.

Intel® Core™ i7-7500U Processor

Why? Because the ram with the higher rated speeds will only be downclocked to 2133 anyway and you will realize absolutely no benefit. The only time one should consider buying ram with a higher rated speed is if they intend to do some 'tailored" overclocking, and since I doubt you can do that with your unit, it would be a total waste of money IMHO. Moreover, some OEM laptops are very finicky, and in rare cases, they might not even recogize the higher rated ram (on boot) and you would be stuck returning the purchase.

Now, I did find someone that actually benchmarked your unit with turbo boost enabled and it looks like the turbo boost function also upclocked the standard ram speed from 2133 to 2704. So, if Lenovo lets you use the turbo boost option, I am sure they are aware of the need to upclock the installed ram speed:
