My Lenovo Ideapad 3 15ARE05 (Ryzen5 4500U@512GB NVMe@8GB RAM)

2020-09-19, 3:40 AM

Hi! Firstly, excuse my english, I'm a romanian guy.

I am at the second Lenovo laptop (the one in the title), simply I love it!. I just bought this one replacing my old G580, still functional.

I have some questions and if you can help me, I'll be grateful.

  1. Is there a software to monitorize SSD? Umis SSD NVMe, never heard about it... are they reliable?
  2. Is there a way to make display brighter? At ~80% brightness, the display is still very dark.
  3. How to make Fn key working?

Thanks in advance!

Salut,
So to get to your questions:

1. What exactly do you want to monitor about your SSD ? I personally use CrystalDiskInfo made by CrystalMark to read out the S.M.A.R.T data on the disk. Don't go crazy about it, now days SSDs have pretty reliable algorithms that evenly distributes writes on its internal pages so that you get the most out of its lifespan.

2. Sadly if your specific panel produces low brightness (measured in nits or sometimes called cd/m2 , candle per square meter - same measure units) you can't do anything about it.
Just be more careful when you purchase a notebook. Personally, I have to deal with direct sunlight on the display during my workflow and I don't settle for anything lower than 300 nits brightness. Just keep that in mind for your next purchase.

3. Go to Microsoft Store and search "LenovoUtility" (no space, or click the link here). After installing that app you should be able to use your keyboard's Fn functions. You'll also see a transparent square appearing on your screen indicating which function you toggled when you press the keys.
As for how you use Fn functions, as someone already replied it depends on what mode you are in. You can change that mode in the bios but you can also use Lenovo Vantage app or the battery widget in your taskbar. Keep in mind that all those are Windows 10 apps. Those laptops have been designed to run Windows 10 ! You can even run Linux but I don't recommend going back to older Windows operating systems, like Windows 7.
There are two mode: Special Function and F1-F12 Function; they define the default operation of the top row of your keyboard.
In F1-F12 Function mode when you press F1 you'll get F1, to get the Mute function you'll need to press the Fn+F1 combination.
Special function mode works in the opposite way: this time pressing F1 key will give you Mute function and to get F1 you'll need to press Fn+F1

I'm not sure about IdeaPad 3 keyboard but on my IdeaPad 5 14ARE05 I have a little led on the Esc key (with FnLock writing on it) indicating which mode I'm in. When is light up means I'm in F1-F12 Function mode

I hope that will bring you up to speed. If you have any further questions please feel free to ask me, even in Romanian if English isn't your thing ^^ .

Cheers,
Cody / Codruț

Thank you both, my friends, especially Codruț. I also used CristalDiskMark, but it shows errors. The temperature is negative (lol) and many entries from SMART are erroneous. More tha that, I also use Vantage, but I think I need to improve my knowledge about it, because I just installed it. Multumesc mult, prietene! Chiar mi-ai fost de ajutor.

Speaking about my panel, it's not so dark, I'm bothered by how it adjusts the brightness: it's very dark up to 80% then the brightness increases suddenly to maximum. At my previous Lenovo G580 the brightness was increasing linearly...
