Question about 4GB RAM upgrade to 8GB RAM upgrade (Ideapad 320-15IAP)

2019-01-05, 18:28 PM

Hi all,

The laptop I have is very slow. I have deterined that going from 4GB DDR3 @1600Mhz to 8GB DDR 3 or 4 will be very benifical. I have a couple of questions.

1. Is the RAM currectly installed into the laptop solderd in? If so could I just add an identical 4GB DDR3 stick to bring it up to 8GBs?

2. Where can I purchase RAM for this laptop in the United Kingdom (online websites etc..)

3. Does this laptop support DDR4 or am I resristed to DDR3?

4. How many RAM slots do I have? (I think I have one, but have not opened the latop yet)

Many thanks for future responses, Ollie.

According to PSREF, your laptop supports up to 8GB RAM DDR3 and have only single SO-DIMM slot. You have to replace installed 4GB module with 8GB one.

List of officially supported 8GB modules:

FRU: 5M30G18424 or 03T7118, Samsung M471B1G73EB0-YK0.

FRU: 5M30L20981, RAMAXEL RMT3160MP68FAF-1600.

FRU: 5M30K59785, Micron MT16KTF1G64HZ-1G9P1.

FRU: 5M30K59783, SK Hynix HMT41GS6DFR8A-PB.

Check eBay or Amazon. You may also buy a module from different vendor e.g. Crucial, but it need to have following parameters: PC3L-12800S DDR3L 1600MHz CL11 SO-DIMM.

It supports DDR3L, which uses lower voltage (1.35V), than standard DDR3 (1.5V).

Single DDR3L SO-DIMM slot.

Usually there are two reasons - insufficient RAM capacity and HDD disk. Once you upgrade RAM, please consider replacing current disk with SSD.

In the future, please make sure to create a separate topic for your questions. Otherwise almost no one will notice it, especially when you create a post in such an old topic.

Regarding your question. Your device supports up to 8GB RAM. Following 8GB modules are officially supported:

  • Micron MT16KTF1G64HZ-1G6E1
  • Sharetronic SM322NW08IAF
  • SK Hynix HMT41GS6AFR8A-PB
  • Samsung M471B1G73QH0-YK0

Other DDR3L (1.35V) PC3-12800 (1600MHz) CL11 modules may also work, but please avoid Kingston as they are known to cause compatibility issues.

As for disk, please look for Samsung 860 EVO SSD. In general, it is a good choice.
