RAM Upgrading on Lenovo Ideapad 330-15ARR

2019-01-27, 1:22 AM

How do I know if my laptop (Lenovo Ideapad 330-15ARR, Ryzen 3 2200U, Radeon RX Vega 3) has 2 ram slots? CPU-Z seems to say I have 2 slots, but Crucial Scanner says I have 1 bank. What does it mean?

For dual channel specs of the two rams must be exactly same (including size)

For example, Rams from two different manufacturers are not likely to run on dual channel and so on. Also for ideapad 330 series max ram supported per s,ot is 8 gb

Hello and welcome,

I can only go by what I read in the base spec. Per that you have a single RAM slot, and may also have 4GB soldered to the planar.

http://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/Lenovo%20Laptops/ideapad%20330%20(15_)%20AMD/ideapad_330_15_AMD_Platform_Specifications.pdf

15ARR: 16GB max / 2400MHz DDR4, dual-channel capable,
optional 4GB memory soldered to systemboard,
one DDR4 SO-DIMM socket

You can compare your specific MT-M with those on the PSREF page, or search for it there.

Does this mean I can run the soldered 4gb along with a 16gb? If yes, can it run in dual channel?

So a 16gb or 8gb will not be helpful? I mean will the 4gb perform better?

Nah, that is incorrect. You absolutely have the ability to use dual-channel with your laptop. I too have a 15ARR, mine is a Ryzen 7, but nevertheless, mine came with the same 2666 DDR4 module soldered to the board. In addition, it has a single 4GB 2666 DDR4 module in the removable slot. Both of them being present enables dual-channel mode and provides 8GB total memory. If I change out the removable 4GB module to an 8GB 2666 DDR4 module with same specs (called memory timings or CL rate) you keep your dual-channel mode and now have 12GB. This works with up to a 16GB module in the removeable slot, netting you the maximum capable capacity of 20GB.
Again, you keep dual-channel mode so long as you have two memory modules (removable or not) working in tandem with one another. You can verify this with a tool such as CPU-Z. It will show what mode your memory is operating in as well as its frequency and timings. Enjoy!

Hello, I have the same model as yours. Does upgrading the RAM help with gaming performance? Also, what's the most compatible RAM chip for my model?
