Unable to update BIOS (critical update) for Ideapad 720S-13ARR

2019-07-26, 2:36 AM

I received a prompt from Lenovo Vantage to install a critical update for BIOS (update 6KCN43WW). However, I was unable to update the BIOS. The error message said that my OS is version 15603 and cannot be updated. I have tried updating my Windows 10 (64 bit) and restarted the laptop and repeated trying to install the update a few times. Can someone help? Thanks.

@tce, did you find a solution?
I have the same problem... it says that it's a critical update, but when I run the tool I get the following error!!

I also tried updating and restarting my machine, but same error again!

No I didn't get any replies. I checked for posts in previous years for those who have similar problems. I couldn't understand the technical bits mentioned. I guess need to contact Lenovo for support.

I also did some reading, but no results, especially that some previous updates crashed the device. ( version 6KCN28WW  my device up )

I will try to contact the support, please do too, and let's update each other.
the support in Germany is not very responsive, and I'd appreciate if you write an update in case u get any.

All,

The support site unfortunately isn't very clear, I'll provide a clearer explanation later this week, but simply put not everybody should nor do they need to install version 6KCN40WW. If you are receiving an error message during the installation then you belong to the group that does not require that version; the error message is correct.

Hi Andy, thank you. I am trying to install 6KCN43WW, not 40WW. Meanwhile, I have contacted my local Lenovo support team for their help. Awaiting their troubleshooting.

Hi, I have contacted the Lenovo PremiumCare support for Malaysia. I have uninstalled Lenovo vantage and rerun the system update, as requested by the support specialist. I have also verified the system information and BIOS information on my system. Unfortunately I am still unable to update. The support specialist said he will check on whether the update is really required by my system, and will get back to me by tomorrow.

Hope this helps akram

Re: Unable to update BIOS (critical update) for Ideapad 720S-13ARR

This is all a bit less than intuative I'm afraid; I've been speaking with an L2 Engineer who advised me that there was a change in the mainboard specifications at the same time the preloaded OS on the system changed from RS2 to RS3. In short there are two different mainboards, two different BIOSes and two different graphic drivers which are dependent on which OS version the system was released with; this is very unclear on the support site and I'm looking to find a method for customers to easily identify which of the versions is relevant to their system. And, it would also appear, to further complicate matters Lenovo Vantage is also unable to identify the difference between the systems.

I am looking for to clarify further but so far it appears as follows;

If your system has an installed BIOS version beginning with "2" or "3" the latest BIOS version is 6KCN30WW, the AMD VGA driver is 22.19.655.5120 which is linked to from this (out of date) document - it's listed under Important Notice.

If your system has an installed BIOS version commencing with a "4" the latest BIOS version is 6KCN43WW, the AMD VGA driver is 23.20.826.1792.A.

To easily discover which BIOS is installed on your system press the Windows button + R, enter  msinfo32  into the text field and click on OK. In the System Information document the BIOS Version/Date should be on row 11.

Thanks so much Andy. No wonder I keep on getting atikmpag.sys blue screens. Does this mean I don't have to update the BIOS despite the "Critical update" flag?

Hi,

I would say yes you are correct; there is no need for you to update the BIOS.
