What kind of SD card controller is in a Lenovo IdeaPad 120S-11AIP? SDHC or SDXC compatible?

2018-01-12, 20:15 PM

Nowhere in the documentation, web site is any info about what kind of controller and hence what size SD cards this model is supporting.

Even Lenovo tech support doesn't know that info!

I am really hesitant to buy a SDXC card of +32GB only to find out it supports on SDHC cards, thus limited to 32GB...

thanks for any useful info,

Ralf

Re: What kind of SD card controller is in a Lenovo IdeaPad 120S-11AIP? SDHC or SDXC compatible?

Hi!

I've been browsing for an answer to this question as well and just decided to pop my phone's micro (128 gigs) into it (the Lenovo Ideapad 120s-11iap) to see what would happen and the laptop read it no problem. So my consensus is 32+ is fine. Hope this wasn't too late of a reply.

Hi ITWorxLA,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

As per system overview :

IO port: Memory card slot (SD/SDHC/SDXC/MMC)

Platform specification:

One microSD Card slot, supports up to 2TB

Usually there would be stickers on the box or laptop to indicate the format it also supports.

You can try to find/borrow  a spare 32GB SDXC to test first before purchase.

Hope this helps answer your query.

Regards

Re: What kind of SD card controller is in a Lenovo IdeaPad 120S-11AIP? SDHC or SDXC compatible?

Well, the first one (system overview) refers to an Ideapad 310S-11AIP, not the 120S-11AIP that I have...

The second one, the PDF with the platform specification does indeed state up to 2TB (which would indicate SDXC), and that file is dated November 2017, while the one that I had downloaded just before Christmas, when I had to by my Ideapad, is unddated and just states "Card reader Micro SD card slot × 1"

As mentioned in my original post, when I contacted Lenovo tech support, they were not able to tell me the specs either. This is all now a couple weeks ago, as I had been distracted by the recent fires and potenial mudslides in the neighborhood.

Just saw a 64SB SDXC mircoSD card at Best Buy for $29.99 and will get one of those to replace the 16GB SDHC card that I have so far "borrowed" from my Raspberry Pi 3... ;-)

Hi ITWorxLA,

Greetings.

I also was not able to get a specified SD card specification particular to the 120s -11AIP at the moment other than the product specification sheet describing up to 2 TB support like capacity for  SDXC memory card (32GB-2TB).

On one of the reviews here, Card Reader: microSD/SDHC/SDXC was noted.

It would help others with the same query if you can test it to confirm.

Any update wiould be appreciated.

Regards

Sorry for a late reply, but yes, I can confirm now as well that the 120S-11AIP has an SDXC compatible SD card controller.

As I mentioned, I went and bought a 64GB microSD card and used that in the notebook ever since.

This is not fully solved. The question of capacity is clear - SDXC cards are supported. But the question of speed remains unanswered. What speed of bus is supported by the card reader? If it's only HS (25 MB/s) it would be a waste of money to buy the faster cards.

well i have tested the Samsung Evo Select MicroSD card 64gb(The green one, shows 60gb) (Specs: Up to 100MB/s & 60MB/s read & write speeds respectively; Class 10 UHS 3) in the Lenovo Ideapad 120s-11iap
i tested it with CrystalDiskMark 6.0.2 x64 and my result (With parameters: (3 / 500MiB)):

                        Read MB/s               Write MB/s

Seq Q32T1:   78.33                         57.04

4KiB Q8T8:    6.237                        0.407

4KiB Q32T1:  4.938                        0.403

4KiB Q1T1:     4.035                        0.403

I dont know if with the Sandisk A2 micro sd cards we can get better numbers but... at least we dont have a bad microsd reader

(Sorry for my bad english)
