battery led indicator

2017-12-27, 9:45 AM

I have an ideapad 500-15ISK i7, when I charge my laptop the battery led indicator changes from orange to white and remains like this while charging and does not change when the battery is fully charged. So, I am not able to know if the battery is fully charged while my laptop is turned off.

Hi Mohamed2018,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Checking the battery indicator guide from the hardware manual (here on page 29):

When the battery charge reaches 20%, the blinking color will change to white (from amber less 20% charge).

The battery has between 20% and 80% charge (blinking white).

When the battery reaches 80% charge, the light will stop blinking (solid white)

About the battery pack (page 22):

Battery charging does not start until the Power Meter shows that less than 95% of the total power remains; under this condition, the battery pack can charge to 100% of its capacity. This protects the battery pack from being overcharged or from having a shortened life.

It would be a good guide to use the battery indicator as it goes solid white to unplug for 80% charge to prevent exhausting the battery charge cycle and blinking amber (20%) to prevent full battery drain.

Hope this helps answer your query.

Update us how it goes for you.

Regards

Is there any harm to my device if I used it while charging?

Hi Mohamed2018,

Greetings.

No, there's no harm using your laptop while charging with a cool ambient surrounding.

This would actually save charge life cycle to your battery since the power is delivered in direct AC instead of using the battery.

Regards

would be more correct to say:

It would be a good guide to use the battery indicator as it goes solid white to unplug until about 80% of full charge to prevent exhausting the battery charge cycle and then when blinking amber (20%) to plug in / start charging to prevent full battery drain.  This method would be better in prolonging/lengthening the battery life than plugging AC all the time (even when battery is fully charged).

Please kindly reply to avoid confusion - thank you very much.

Spidey, sorry please clarify - your answers are confusing - in this post you said, when the computer is ON, it is better to use AC all the time, but on a later post you said it, when the computer is ON, is better to unplug after about 80% of fully charged - kindly reply and explain - thank you.

By the way, I use a Lenovo carbon X1 gen 3  Model 20BTS1V900 (July-2015). When the computer is turned off and being plugged in, it has no lighting LED at all (am I missing anyhing here ?) - only a a brief blinking light of LED on the cover when the AC plug is inserted - after that it is off all the time - thus cannot tell when it is fully charged.  Charging has been successful at all times. I got my laptop in this condition from the beginning. When the computer is ON and is being charged then the cover LED and the battery icon on display, will tell that it is charging.  Please explain, advise or correct - again thanks.

Best regards, Ben

Hi mrbeanchoky,

Greetings.

The post was referring to ideapad 500-15ISK model and would be very much different for X1 Carbon Gen 3 designs (page 44) indicators.

I would suggest starting a topic under the thinkpad category so that fellow users and specialist would be able to share their ideas regarding your query.

Hope to see your post soon.

Regards
