Cannot enter safe mode

Booted in safe mode.  Cannot enter because it doesn't recognize my password.  I can't go forward or backward.  How do I escape?

Re: Cannot enter safe mode

If you are just stuck at the login screen, you should be able to go back to regular mode by following the steps below

  • Boot to the Safe Mode login screen
  • Hold down the Shift key, and then select Restart from the lower right icon of the login screen
  • Upon Restart, you should go to the Choose an Option screen, and from there just choose the Continue (exit and continue to Windows 10) and you should reboot back into normal mode.

FYI     The reason you probably could not login is that you are using a Microsoft Account (online) to log into your computer rather than a Local Account, and in safe mode you had no Internet access for the account password to be verified.     I personally would recommend that unless you have multiple computers that you want the settings to be the same based upon an online Microsoft Account profile, that you switch over to a Local Account, or at least create one Local Administrator account.

How to change to a Local Account

Press the Windows Key + A to open the Action Center

  • Select All Settings
  • Select Accounts
  • Select "Sign in with Local Account Instead"
  • Enter your current Microsoft Account Password
  • Enter your new Local Account username/password/hint
  • Select Next
  • Select Sign out and finsih
  • Login using your new local account

Note:  If desired, you can swtich back at any time by following the same steps.

How to Add a new Local User Account

Press the Windows Key + A to open the Action Center

  • Select All Settings
  • Select Accounts
  • Select Family and other people
  • Select + sign to Add someone else to this PC
  • Select I don't have this persons sign in information
  • Select Add a user without a Microsoft Account
  • Enter Username/password and hint information
  • select Next to return to the Accounts Screen

Change the newly created account to an Administrator account

  • Double click on the newly created account to open
  • Select Change Account Type
  • Use pull-down menu to change from Standard User to Administrator
  • Select OK to save

Hope that helps,
