Flex 3 1580 crashing

Hi.  My laptop seems to crash at roughly 1 hour of use, regardless of battery life or what I am doing.  Screen goes black and I am unabe to do anything.  I am still able to adjust the brightness of the backlighting and I can see that the screen does turn off and on, but it will still be black.  This started happeneing a little while ago.  No idea why honestly.  Any insight would be appreciated.  I have updated the display drivers only since it was crashing a lot when wacthing youtube.

Re: Flex 3 1580 crashing

Hi there, Omega -

Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.

You could also use the System Restore feature to get your computer back the time when it worked. Also, try updating the latest BIOS.

Update us how it goes.

Re: Flex 3 1580 crashing

I am not sure when it actually started happening anymore.  I think it actually started after updating to the latest BIOS.  When I had to restart because the laptop would not come out of sleep after closing the lid, I noticed it was trying to update the BIOS automatically but couldn't since it was not hooked up to a power source.  Not waking up from sleep was fixed, but the crashing started happening.  I tried to update the BIOS manually recently but it was the same version that was automatically installed.

Re: Flex 3 1580 crashing

After digging through some of the settings and random testing, I found that the crashing stopped if I manually reset the laptop.  I disabled the faster startup for windows as well.  Dunno if that was it, but I haven't had any problems for a few days now.  Takes a bit longer to load, but much better than having to force shutdown the laptop every time the monitor goes black.  Not sure where the setting is anymore, but found it somewhere.

Re: Flex 3 1580 crashing

I would suggest you to perform the clean installation of windows & check id still issue persist. If still issue persist, you may have to format the complete HDD & run diagnostic test.

Note: Before doing clean installation, please take the data backup

Re: Flex 3 1580 crashing

Seems like a bit much just to be able to boot up faster.  I honestly don't mind the slower load time, as long as it isn't crashing.   If there is a new BIOS update, I may try it again to see if there is any crashing, but I'll leave things as it is for now.  Screen isn't going nuts while watching videos, and computer wakes up from sleep every time now, so it's been working much better than before.

Re: Flex 3 1580 crashing

Crashing has started to happen again unfortunately.  Still no idea what is going on.  Is there any way to figure out what is going on without having to reinstall windows?  Could it be driver isuues?  I get visual problems every once in a while.  Parts of the browser will become garbled and wont fix until I close it and open it again.  I have been updating through the geforce experience program after using lenovo drivers.  Should I roll back to those drivers?

Re: Flex 3 1580 crashing

@omegazion I've been experiencing same issue. I've done a completly fresh install of windows and i still get the issue. I then reinstalled the Nvidia drivers but that didn't make a difference either. Im dual booting Windows 10 and Ubuntu and i don't run into the problem at all when im booted into Ubuntu. I was looking around in the bios the other day and noticed an option to use the intel CPU to drive graphics instead of the Nvidia940m. I think ill flip that switch next time i boot into Windows and see if that makes a difference. Hopefully that will help narrow down the issue.

Re: Flex 3 1580 crashing

In response to customer reports of displays or screens turning off on Lenovo systems while in use and running on battery power, Lenovo has released a solution via update to the Intel Management Engine Firmware, v.11.0.0.1176.

The Intel ME Firmware has been approved for the following models:

  • ideapad 300S-14ISK, ideapad 500S-14ISK
  • Lenovo Edge 2-1580
  • Lenovo Flex 3-1480, Flex 3-1580,
  • Yoga 500-14ISK, Yoga 500-15ISK

The Intel ME Firmware can be downloaded here: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds105001

If the solution provided by Lenovo does not resolve the issue for you, other customers report that a workaround provided by customer MattDN93 also resolves the issue. More information about the workaround can be found here: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-IdeaPad-100-305-500-Edge/Flex-3-screen-turns-off-when-working-on...

Thank you,

Re: Flex 3 1580 crashing

Still have the problem after updating.  It worked better for a pretty good time.  The other thread posted shows that reformatting and re installing would be the best option.  May nee to figure that out and then backup the stuff I want.  Glad there isn't too much stuff on this computer.  I did notice that the screen was becoming garbled again before the computer finally black screened.  Selected text started to become blocky and firrerent colors.  I think it really does have something to do with the GPU.  Not computer saavy though, so no idea what to do.  Glad i just use this to wwatch videos, simple gaming and web browsing instead of work.
