Flex3 Black Screen

I've seen the other thread on the Flex3 'black screen' issue, and I'm not sure that it's the same problem I have - though the symptoms and failure mode are the exact same. Edit: The screen goes blank, no more sound / network activity / signs of life beside the screen. Sometimes the laptop appears in the same state when opening the lid.

 

At this point, I've tried:

  • Factory reset using the Windows reset function
  • Check forums. Perform clean install of Windows 10 using media downloaded from Microsoft
    • Upgraded driver as described in the 'black screen' thread
  • Check forums. Perform factory one touch reset
    • Upgrade drivers again.
  • Thinking it might be a hardware issue, I took it to Lenovo recommended repair specialist (MicroCenter). They replaced the HD, but lost a screw cover on the front.
  • Same Issue, Contact Lenovo support
    • Rollback the graphics driver to a previous version, insist I try using a different monitor when issue happens
    • Perform factory one touch reset
  • Same Issue, Contact Lenovo support, they ask to have it sent in.
    • No report I can find of what (if anything) they did, laptop appears to be reset to factory install.
  • Get laptop back this past week, and issue occured AGAIN on 11/17/2016

At this point, I think I just purchased a doorstop that I can't use, as I keep getting these black screens.

 

Playing random youtube videos in chrome (eg: starting a playlist), seems to trigger it fairly consistently. I'm not sure if this is a hardware / software issue, but I'm fairly done with this laptop at this point. Edit: This appears to happen both on external power and on battery.

 

Is there anything else I can try, before purchasing a new NON-LENOVO laptop with a hopeful holiday special?

In response to customer reports of displays or screens turning off on Lenovo systems while in use and running on battery power, Lenovo has released a solution via update to the Intel Management Engine Firmware, v.11.0.0.1176.

 

The Intel ME Firmware has been approved for the following models:

 

Ideapad 300S-14ISK, Ideapad 500S-14ISK

Lenovo Edge 2-1580

Lenovo Flex 3-1480, Flex 3-1580,

Yoga 500-14ISK, Yoga 500-15ISK

 

The Intel ME Firmware can be downloaded here: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds105001

 

If the solution provided by Lenovo does not resolve the issue for you, other customers report that a workaround provided by customer MattDN93 also resolves the issue.
