Re: HDD Hardware TEST FAILED

Welcome to the Forums Saiv!

Getting a SMART test failure message on the Lenovo System Health and Diagnostics might mean a failing hard drive. Then you may want to do a repair or have a brand new hard disk. One way to verify is to run an HDD scan from the manufacturer itself. Click here if you have a Western Digital and click here if you have Seagate or use HD Tune to test the HDD.

You will first be required to do a backup of all your data while the hard drive can still be accessed. Once the backup is done, immediately contact the Lenovo technical support and they will guide you further.

Hence, please contact the authorised Lenovo authorised service center for hardware assistance.

Update us how it goes.

Re: HDD Hardware TEST FAILED

I have a similar question.  I have an E431 laptop that is about 2.5 years old (out of warranty).  The old HDD was starting to fail, so I backed it up and had a new HDD (OEM) installed then recovered the system image to the new drive.  Everything works great.  But today I ran the Lenovo hardware scan and the first time the SMART short self test failed.  So I thought, "that can't be right!"  So I ran a second scan and this time it passed.

So my question is, do I have anything to worry about?  Should I go back to the shop that installed the drive and tell them now (while there is still a warranty on the drive)?  But odds are they'll check it and everything will look okay.  So what to do?  Can I safely ignore the first scan result and blissfully go on my way?

The HDD is  500 GB HGST HTS7250A7E630 7200RPM.  Is there a more-reliable test I can run on the drive?  Thanks!

Re: HDD Hardware TEST FAILED

Thanks.  I went to the site you indicated and downloaded the Storage device diagnostic tool and ran it.  The result code was WHD01V000-UL8BUI

All tests passed except the SMART drive self test didn't complete--it gave a warning saying "critical:  cannot perform self test".

What else should I do at this point?  Thanks again!

Re: HDD Hardware TEST FAILED

This kind of S.M.A.R.T (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology; often written as SMART) test errors occurs only when there is issue with system HDD (Hard Disk Drive) or SSD.

Smart test - issue is related to HDD drive and you have to get it replaced with our authorized service center.

Re: HDD Hardware TEST FAILED

This HDD is a brand new one that a Lenovo authorized service center installed less than 2 weeks ago. Is it possible this test result is wrong?

Re: HDD Hardware TEST FAILED

The Storage Device result code may indicate an imminent failure on the HDD or may just be a false positive error. To verify, can you try to run a hardware scan using the Lenovo Solutions Center or run the storage test from the Individual Diagnostic Tools and post the results here.

Re: HDD Hardware TEST FAILED

Thanks. I ran all tests in HD Tune Pro and they are all normal. No damages blocks and no other errors. So I think it's okay. I will periodically rerun the tests and keep an eye on it. Thanks again.
