IdeaPad 330s-15ARR M.2 SSD - what is the max size supported

I recently ordered an IdeaPad 330S-15ARR with the AMD Ryzen 5 processor.  It comes with a 128GB SSD. I want to upgrade the storage capacity.

Model # is 81FB006AUS.

I have three questions:

  • What is the largest SSD that can be installed into the M.2 slot? The April 2018 hardware reference manual indicates 256GB, but folks online have recently indicated it is now 512GB.
  • Does the M.2 slot only support SSDs with the PCIe interface, e.g., the M.2 slot does not support SATA SSDs?
  • Is the 128GB SSD it came with an M.2 form factor or a 2.5" drive?  The laptop is currently in transit, so I can't check.

Thanks!

Brad

Re: IdeaPad 330s-15ARR M.2 SSD - what is the max size supported

Hi veloearl,

Greetings.

Officially, it is 256G M.2 PCIE 2280. It would be the largest m.2 pcie nvme ssd offered to this model.

Examples are:

Hynix PC401 256G M.2 2280 PCIe HFS256GD9TNG-62A0A SSD

Toshiba XG5 256GB M.2 2280 PCIe KXG50ZNV256G SSD

Samsung PM981 256G M.2 2280 PCIe MZVLB256HAHQ-000L2 SSD

PM961 MZVLW256HEHP PCIE 256G SSD

This m.2 slot do not support SATA so choose the faster PCIe NVMe m.2 ssd.

Yours would have PN 01FR502 Storage SSD PM871b 128G SAM . Its a 2.5 inch 7mmSATA drive similar to this and not the m.2 PCIe NVMe 2280 storage stick.

I hope this helps answer your query.

Regards

Thank you, spidey101.

Is there something in the hardware or BIOS that limits the max size to 256GB?

Thanks,

Brad

Re: IdeaPad 330s-15ARR M.2 SSD - what is the max size supported

Hi veloearl,

It may, but not strictly since I have seen couples of resellers like Crucial that say " guaranteed compatible" even up to 1TB capacity like here. By OEM documentation it was just certified up to 256GB upon testing and was OEM initial offering.

Personally, I would try testing it with a spare or at least with reseller guarantee as I am still optimistic that it can work. We just do not have a confirmed case from fellow community members yet at the moment.

Regards

Re: IdeaPad 330s-15ARR M.2 SSD - what is the max size supported

Thanks again.

This laptop supports two different battery capacities. Are they both the exact same form factor? Or does the larger one require the 2.5" bay to be empty, like with some laptops?

Hi veloearl,

Greetings.

Two battery type is offered for the model but is not supported interchangeably. Aside from BIOS coding, the specification and form factor is different. You can check on the details from the image and as the 3Cell is bigger and have different ratings.

Re: IdeaPad 330s-15ARR M.2 SSD - what is the max size supported

Wow, yeah, those are definitely not interchangeable!

I decided to go with a 500GB 2.5" SATA III drive. This laptop won't have the appropriate workload to notice the performance benefits of the PCIe interface. The additional cost and potential compatibility risk isn't worth it.

Thanks again for your help; all of your answers were very clear and thorough.
