Just replaced my Yoga 2 13" (which was getting flakey) with a new IdeaPad 520S. It has a 256GB SSD in it, but I've read online that there's an M.2 (?) slot inside as well. I'd rather not open it up on day one to check, but is that the case, and if so, will ANY M.2 SSD fit and work as a second drive?

Welcome to the Community Forums.
It would help if you have the machine number included from the sticker to identify specific board type.
You may privately message me the serial number if needed.
Hope this helps answer your query.
Update us how it goes.

As per parts lookup, motherboard shows Part number 5B20N784541 MB C 80X2 WIN I77500U UMA FP BL.
Internally show available slot for part number 5SD0L73445 Samsung PM961 MZVLW128HEGR PCIE 128G SSD offered for model type 80X2.
It would still be best to check if the port is electronically active before purchase as it does accomodate M.2 NGFF PCIe Gen3 x4, NVME Solid state drive SSD as additional storage.

On 14ikb 80x2 i've put HP EX900 256 M.2. SSD and worked fine.
Now i have 2 hdd. 1 Tb HDD and 256 gb M.2. SSD.
If you want the windows to work faster you need to instal windows on M.2. SSD.
You need to create a partion after plugin, using for example Disk Management from windows 10 or another, otherwise because you will not see the drive
