Ideapad 100S-11BY unusable after firmware update

2018-11-22, 10:00 AM

After a firmware update that ran smoothly, I get the following message:

BITLOCKER

Enter the recovery key to reboot.

Since I never activated Bitlocker, I have no recovery key and no idea on how to proceed.

Can it be that Lenovo activated  Bitlocker from the very beginning without any information to the users?

Any help is much appreciated!

Hi Bobby!

Thank you very much for your message, you solved my problem!

On the other hand, I am absolutely certain not to have set Bitlocker on the Ideapad.

So, I cannot understand that a recovery key has been stored in my Microsoft account.

Black magic is nevertheless always welcome if it solves an issue!

Thank you again!

Bobby_Lenovo, you say "Bitlocker is not enabled by default." I assume that is applicable only for older Windows version.

I am dealing with my Thinkpad being locked down by Bitlocker and your own solutions page:

"Starting with Windows 10 version 1703, Windows will enable automatic Device Encryption on most notebook computers. This happens with the Lenovo factory preload, as well as a clean installation of Windows 10 from retail media."

Also, buried in the Thinkpad UserGuide is the following non-warning:

"If you are using the Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption feature and your computer has a Trusted Platform Module, do not change the startup sequence. BitLocker Drive Encryption locks the computer when it detects the change of startup sequence."

Normal users, I would suggest, would have zero idea that there C: drive was encrypted at the Lenovo factory preload - particularly when there was no Bitlocker Recovery Key provided with the documentation that came from that factory to the end user.

All this to say that I am currently waiting for a data recovery specialist to call/email me back to tell me whether or not they can recover my potentially lost data because Lenovo refuses to acknowledge they encrypted my harddrive before sending it to the distributor.

I think that this thread about it wanting a BitLocker key might benefit from your post on another thread, so I am linking it here:
