Ideapad 100s - Bitlocker Recovery Key

I have an Ideapad 100s - my daughter left it at home after going to college and I want to start using it.  I used the one-touch recovery option but it is asking me for a recovery key.  The website to which the screen refers me says I have to log into an account to get a bitlocker recovery key...  There are no keys associated with the account, nor did we encrypt the drive when setting up the computer.  How can I get a recovery key?  There is a device ID on the screen, but MS does not apparently associate an ID with a recovery key anywhere...

Any help would be appreciate,

Bob

Re: Ideapad 100s - Bitlocker Recovery Key

Hi BobK21919,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

The bitlocker features are part of Microsoft Windows that may have been left enabled to prevent unauthorized access of the data.

The following articles may help:

How to find BitLocker recovery key on Windows 8.1/10

Find my BitLocker recovery key

Hope this helps answer your query.

Update us how it goes.

Regards

Re: Ideapad 100s - Bitlocker Recovery Key

Thanks!  I had already looked at that article but

there was no paper with the computer that had a bitlocker code

there was no USB drive with the computer

there was no code associated with the account

it’s almost as if they want you to just buy a different one....

any other ideas?

Re: Ideapad 100s - Bitlocker Recovery Key

Hi BobK21919,

Following the support article, you need to have your daughter sign in to her Microsoft account and go to BitLocker Recovery Keys

Else in the below condition:

I’m signed in with my Microsoft account, but I don’t see my recovery key

The recovery key might not have been saved to your Microsoft account online. In this case, look for any copies of the recovery key you might have printed or saved to a file.

If you accidentally deleted the recovery key from your Microsoft account online and want to save it again, you need to force Windows to back up the recovery key automatically. The only way to do this is to switch to a local account, and then switch back to a Microsoft account.

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, tap Settings, and then tap Change PC settings.
(If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, click Settings, and then click Change PC settings.)
  2. Tap or click Users, tap or click Switch to a local account, and follow the instructions.
  3. Repeat step 1, tap or click Users, tap or click Switch to a Microsoft account, and follow the instructions.

Update us how it goes

Regards

Added note:

Re: Ideapad 100s - Bitlocker Recovery Key

Thanks - I will try that.  The funny thing is, my daughter was a minor at the time and when I attempted to set up her account MS responded that she could not have her own account because of her age.  So her account was associated with mine somehow.  I bought one of these for my son as well and I still get weekly reports from MS on his online activity.  My point being, it was never her account to begin with which is why it would be strange if the key is associated with her account and not mine....

I will let you know what I find out...

Hi BobK21919,

Both links are for Win 8/8.1/10

How to find BitLocker recovery key on Windows 8.1/10

Find my BitLocker recovery key

You can try your your MS account and your daughter's account at https://skydrive.live.com/recoverykey.

Else, call in Microsoft directly for assistance.

You can create a local admin account initially then switch to Microsoft account.

Re: Ideapad 100s - Bitlocker Recovery Key

Just to put in my two cents. I had the same issue after an update. I had been using the Lenovo for years and it was only after the last update this turned up. I never turned BitLocker on but from what I gather it may have been turned on by Lenovo. No keys were saved to my current Microsoft account, however I had forgotten about an old account with a different email address and that is where they were. Just make sure you check all of your Microsoft accounts even if you don't use them anymore.

Re: Ideapad 100s - Bitlocker Recovery Key

We had similar issue with Son's computer for school.  Had Windows 10 Home when bought on it, which does not include BitBlocker.  We sent in for speaker to be fixed to Lenovo and when the laptop came back and we turned on it had the Bitlocker screen on.  According to Windows and Best Buy the computer only had Windows Home when we purchased which does not include BitLocker.

Bitlocker is apparently only in Professional or Windows Enterprise.

Since it was never active or even on the computer we had the run around as well looking in the Microsoft accout, which like prior email, 1) was never linked since never needed it and no reason to

2) we did not have paper copy since was never suppose to be on computer

We have spent hours with Microsoft, and 2 trips to BestBuy where we bought, but this was clearly just done when serviced, since not part of the original Windows and happened when being serviced and likely just an install of new op system to try to address the speaker issue.

Microsoft and Best Buy all believe when serviced by Lenov was resintalled with Professonal or Enterprise since Home did not have.

But can't figure out why someone would send a Lock Computer back to us, with no way to get the 48 digit Code to unlock the computer.

We have been waiting 2 days for a response from Lenovo

As best we can tell from discussions form others either an upgrade of Windows or when serviced at the Lenov service location and reinstall of Windows Professional was installed and someone locked it.

So all will need to be reinstalled since sounds like hope of ever unincripting the hard drive is 0%

It is shocking that something like Bitlocker is ebedded in the program and not aware of.

I have found out from our Corp systems people (10,000+ employees) that used or corprate use, and new window 10 has Bit locked one of my persons computer twice in last month from a glitch.  Since was a corporate PC, we could call them up, provide the 6 digit code and they could retrieve the 48 digit number.  They could only do that since when they set up the computer, they kept a copy of everyones.

I assume that if I had bought Windows Professional, it would come with GIANT warning lable about Bitlocker, since if you do not keep a copy of the 48 digit number, you are toast.

Apparently Microsoft worked with Dell and have corrected issues there the told me.  The also said on some computers there was an Alt Boot key that might restart some computers.  But were not aware of a fix on Lenovo computers.

Only saving grace if we can get the computer fixed is we had backed up the data.  Otherwise all would be lost from a purposefully installed ransomeware, that someone in serving might have the 48 digit key or not.

We just needed Windows Home, since the downside risk is pretty extreme on having it bitlock itself.

Just have to make sure if you have something besides Windows Home, you make sure you have the 48 digit number somewhere.
