Ideapad 310-15ABR Brightness issue

I just purchased this new laptop a couple of days ago and love it other than one thing that is annoying the crap out of me. The screen is too dim when unplugged. It is great when plugged in, but dims quite a bit when it is not. I have the brightness at 100% for both the on battery and plugged in settings so I have no idea how they vary so much. I have it set for high performance, not power saver. The battery saver is also off. I have looked all over the internet and found no useful info.

Hello Footballchief

Thanks for using the Lenovo forums.

Try to download the Video and Chipset drivers for the unit from the support page.

Make sure to reboot after an update.

Re: Ideapad 310-15ABR Brightness issue

I could not find a download called that, but I did do a check and downloaded all the recommended updates for it. I do see one called AMD VGA Driver, that is that closet I see. Is that what you are talking about?

Ideapad 310-15ABR Brightness issue

I have a new Lenovo Ideapad 310-15abr, Windows 10, 64 bit, AMD with a Radeon 7 graphics card, with a display problem. When I unplug the power (so it's on battery), the screen dims. So I went to Power Options and changed the power plan both on and off battery so the screen is at 100 percent brightness. Didn't work. Tried a Custom Plan and then went back to a High Performance plan. I turned off Adaptive brightness; disabled the Sensor Monitoring service; updated the Graphic Card driver;disabled and then enabled the Graphic Card again. Turned off Lenovo's Power Options called Power Stretch and Conservation mode.  Also updated the AMD VGA driver.  Nothing works. Still dim when on battery.

One thing that I have NOT triedit is changing the registry value by using Regedit command and changing the Feature Test Control. I didn't try it for two reasons. One is that I'm not sure what to reset it to (I've seen "ffff" as the setting and something else longer and more complicated). The other reason is that I am too much of a dumbie to be messing with registry values, basically.

I've seen this question asked a couple of times, but no very definitive answers. People usually just tell you to change the Power and Sleep settings so the brightness is on 100% when On Battery.  So that answer is not necessary, but ANY OTHER ANSWERS would be welcome!  Thanks -- Ken

Re: brightness dimming down when unplugging charger

Just adding a response to say that I have the Lenovo Ideapad 310 too, and I have this problem as well.

I have tried going through all settings, advanced settings, whether on Windows or Lenovo, and it remains the same.

Whenever the laptop is unplugged, the screen brightness decreases, and can never get as bright as it was when plugged in.

Would love to find a fix as even at max brightness it's pretty crappy.

Hope this helps, let us know how you get on.

Re: Ideapad 310-15ABR Brightness issue

Hi Krakken -- thanks for taking the time to reply, that was nice of you. However, as I wrote in my original post, I "Also updated the AMD VGA driver" and of course I rebooted. If there is another chipset driver, I didn't find it. Best -- Ken

Re: Ideapad 310-15ABR Brightness issue

Would it be possible for someone to try the following;

  • Right click in a free area of the display and select AMD Radeon Settings
  • In the left of the windows which opens select Preferances
  • Then Radeon Additional Settings
  • Expand the Power option and click on Power Play

Turn off / disable Vari-Brightvari_bright.PNGdisable Vari-BrightOnce you have applied this change it should then be possible for you to choose your own screen brightness on AC and battery by modifying your chosen power profile in Windows advanced power settings.

power settings.PNGWindows advanced power settings

Please let us know your findings

Re: Ideapad 310-15ABR Brightness issue

Andy, that worked!  I had already tried Windows settings, but not the Enable Varibright under Power under Advanced Settings in the Radeon menu..... A million thanks!  (P.S. I clicked on Kudos for you but don't see that it worked.  You get mental Kudos!)

Best -- Kage
