Ideapad 330 Ryzen 5 2500u underperforming

2018-10-06, 8:40 AM

Recently I got a Ideapad 330-15arr with ryzen 5-2500u and dual channel memory and still isn't performing well, isn't a thermal problem, just not getting good fps. Vega 8 is up to date with the lastest driver and in performance mode and still isn't performing. Laptop pluged in.

Welcome to the Community Forums!

Does this just occurs in gaming? Our Idea 330 series could be considered as our midrange model series, not really intended for gaming. It may be equipped with Ryzen 5 2500u, but the Vega 8 is only an integrated GPU, that is built in to the CPU. You could check out the reviews and benchmarks of the Vega 8, conducted by 3rd part known reviewers: https://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu.php?gpu=Radeon+Vega+8&id=3895 and https://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-RX-Vega-8-GPU-Benchmarks-and-Specs.260180.0.html

i m facing the same problem. it performs good as expected for first 5-10 min then gpu clocks down to 200-300 mhz and stays at that clock even after temp less than 55C. This happens for every gpu workload. We need bios with higher temp targets (73-75C) and throttle bug fixed.Currently it is performing less than 50% of other ryzen 2500U laptops. Please look into it asap.

Re: Ideapad 330 Ryzen 5 2500u underperforming

I changed my lenovo for another laptop, but when I had the lenovo it was thorttling on every thing, it under performs compared to other laptops with the same configuration, I think that amd  is better than intel in making powerful cpus for the same price, but have a bad implementation on different chassis, because intel is running the game for so long that they already know what's best paired to make a laptop not throttle, and Lenovo made a throttle beast with this implementation of ryzen mobile.

If the bad thing is vega dropping clock, try lower the cpu maximum performance to 80-90%, because it's a 15w apu and that power goes to the cpu and gpu at the same time, so this will lower the cpu clock and the amount of power needed for the cpu will drop and the gpu clock will be higher.

problem is that 15w apu is not even consuming 7w constantly on full load.i might also return it if lenovo don't provide any update this week.

Mario, you need to forward this issue to your technical guys ASAP.

The 330 series with 2500U throttles badly because the temperature target is set at around 50C for the CPU package. As soon as temps reach that, the CPU & GPU both down-clock heavily. This problem is compounded by the slow ramp speed on the fans, as it stays quiet up to around 60C.

On 330 notebooks with Intel i5-8250U their CPU are allowed to reach 70-80C before throttling (standard temps for these CPUs), so they maintain their boost clocks.

The thing about Ryzen 2500U is that while its an affordable option for notebooks like the i5-8250U, it can play games very well, as the integrated GPU Vega 8 is around 2-3x faster than the Intel HD600 series.

If you guys do not fix this with a bios update, you will lose a TON of sales on the Ryzen models to other brands like Acer, Dell & HP that have 2500U models that don't throttle badly.

The fix is very easy, it's just a TJmax offset in the bios configuration. Change it to 75C max temp before throttling and the 330 with 2500U will perform similar to the other notebooks from Acer, Dell etc.

its not temperature throttle bro, it is power throttling. The apu is allowed to run at more than 15w only for 2 minutes after that it throttle down to 15w.Use amd uprof for apu power measurement, other tools are reporting incorrectly.

At 15W, it wouldn't throttle that badly. GPU is at 300mhz, well below base clocks.

This is with me setting the CPU to be at 25% of maximum so it doesn't boost at all above 1600mhz.

Other notebooks with 15W configs, such as the thin Matebook D, or 13 inch HP slims, never throttle that badly, GPU goes down to around 650mhz and CPU still at 2200mhz.

It's temperature throttling, as soon as it hits 50C it starts to drop clocks. I've tested it plenty.

nope , matebook is mXFR enabled , just run uprof and check socket0 power before and after throttling, even at 1600 mhz whenever cpu usage is above 60% it will downclock gpu, power throttle is clearly visible on uprof , after 2 min gpu fall from 25w to 15w with a continuous curve. Still it can be easily fixed with custom tdp options in bios and better power optimisation ( more share of power to gpu) , lets hope we get a bios update soon :( just like flex 6

From the community reps response, it seems like they have no idea that this is even a problem.

Quite sad to see. Ryzen 2500U is not meant for gaming? Are you guys really that poorly briefed? When the 2500U is allowed to function properly, it comes close to the MX150 discrete GPU.
