Ideapad 520S-14IKB double vid card?

Hello,

I've recently bought a Lenovo Ideapad 520S-14IKB model 81BL. When I bought it, according to the oline specs it should just have had a single vid card, Intel UHD graphics 620.

But looking at the device management, I noticed it has a second vid card, that is an NVIDIA geforce 940MX. I'm not sure if they can work together at the same time and I don't know how to verify which one of the two is working. It seems that they are working on different devices...could it be because I have an hybrid notebook?

If I can use one at a time, can you tell me how to switch between the two?

Thank you all for helping.

Re: Ideapad 520S-14IKB double vid card?

Hi Aggg,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

You may share the machine number/ MTM of the laptop from the sticker or from here (ex. 81BL006HIX). This would allow us to be definite on the specifications intended for your machine.

It does appear that you may have the variant of 520s with discrete graphics aside from Intel as shown in the image. By default in the BIOS configuration tab, it is enabled as swritchable graphics so you expect the NVDIA chip to enable when there is a bigger demand for resources.

You can check the task manager under performance tab how both GPU0 and GPU1 activity as you load up more demanding applications like video editing or gaming softwares. It is initialized by default on intel and switches automatically as the need goes up.

You can also assign games/ apps specific to the 940MX going in to settings> system> display > graphics setting. Choose an app to set preference (classic app) then browse which software to assign to run the NVDIA.

I hope this helps answer your query.

Update us how it goes.

Regards

Re: Ideapad 520S-14IKB double vid card?

Thank you Spidey for your quick reply,

mtm is 81BL0097IX

I don't know, it seems to me that they are not switchable because the nvidia gpu is always at 0%.

I tried to run a 4K video and here you have the performance. It seems that the intel gpu isn't so stressed, thoug the cpu is used massively and the notebook struggles to play the video smoothly. Do you think it would be better if I chance the settings and set chrome for being used with nvidia?

I've always had some issues when using chrome, such as mousepad gestures fail to answer (like the two finger scrolling) and an overall slowing. Could it be related to the switching system between the graphic card?

Never experience issues when running other heavy programs such as photoshop (it doesn't use the nvidia gpu either). I know that chrome demands a lot of ram usage but it shouldn't be a problem for this notebook considering it has 8gb and it doesn't seem to be using much ram anyway.

Re: Ideapad 520S-14IKB double vid card?

Hi Aggg,

The 81BL0097IX do have a dedicated NVDIA GEforce 940MX as shown by the systemboard PN 5B20Q15702 MB C 81BL WIN I58250U GTR 2G FP BL .

Try to turn off the laptop and use the Novo button hole to power it on, This would show the BIOS set up option and check the graphic switch option that should be enabled or switchable and restart.

Task manager does show high ram usage but GPU is not. Changing to chrome does eats up more ram and 8GB may not be enough as I also had this on multiple tab and one game opened. Same lagging on my end with 8GB machine running in Windows 10.

You can try setting photoshop to run on the dedicated GPU1 as mentioned above. Run it on full performance with ac charger connected and power setting on full performance. Then let us check how it fares on the task manager GPU1.

Update us how it goes.

Regards

Re: Ideapad 520S-14IKB double vid card?

yes it was set on switchable. I tried to run a game while checking at the resources management and I noticed that it actually uses the nvidia gpu.
I'll try to do some experiments and switch some app to just nvidia and see wether I can see improvements or not.
Anyway thank you for your help Smiley Happy
