Ideapad 710S stuck in boot options menu (sometimes)

Hi before describing the problem I will give some details about the Laptop and the OS used.

-Ideapad 710s bought in August 2016

-Windows 10 Home China preinstalled

-Clean Install of Windows 10 Home Multilanguage about 2 months ago

(UEFI install with 3 partitions, C, EFI partition, Recovery partition)

[So this laptop is used by a friend of mine who I helped reinstalling the OS to get rid of malware. When reinstalling I faced the usual issue of a not detected HDD due to lack of drivers,

which I had to download to a USB stick and had to load during installation.]

About a month ago my friend started the laptop and got stuck in this screen:

Upon pressing Enter the same screen will come back up afer a short black screen. I entered the BIOS menu (or whatever you call it) and found that there is no HDD listed in the boot options:

I changed all possible settings in that menu but nothing helped to normally boot again.

I created an Ubuntu Live USB stick plugged it in, restarted and...

the laptop booted normally to Windows like nothing had happened.

I checked the boot menu again and the inbuilt HDD was listed in the boot options.

My only guess some time later was that it must be a hardware problem since it appeared so randomly,

and having a USB stick plugged lead to the HDD being recognised again (so is my assumption).

Now, the same screen appeared again some time later and after waiting for a while my friend was able to reboot the laptop to Windows again. I fiddled around with some settings, read alot about UEFI and BIOS and bootloaders and in the end changed the boot procedure to UEFI only. Since then the problem has not reappeared.

My question to you guys is if this could be a Software problem (which I was lead to believe because it only started after I reinstalled Windows) or if this can only be a Hardware issue (which the randomness and the USB stick thing seem to suggest)?

Sorry for the long post, but I thought I'd better include all the details.

Hope anyone has some ideas on this.

greetings,

Jannes

Re: Ideapad 710S stuck in boot options menu (sometimes)

Hi there, Jannesan       -

Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today

When you're in the boot menu you can press bios. In the bios go to the "boot" tab. There should somewhere be an option you can either change in UEFI or to Legacy support, make sure to choose Legacy support here.

Now you should be able to boot again, windows has the wrong screen resolution though. I am not sure if this now completely fixed the problem or if it is a temporary solution.

Also, try changing the boot priority & set HDD as first.

Update us how it goes.

Re: Ideapad 710S stuck in boot options menu (sometimes)

Like I said I tried changing the settings in the bios when the problem occured.

But rebooting in UEFI or Legacy didn't make a difference, the bootprocess always got stuck at that same screen.

Also changing the bootorder to HDD first was not possible, since the HDD was not shown in the boot option order.

When a HDD is not shown in the BIOS at all, it means that it is not being recognised, right?

Can't this only be a hardware issue or am I missing something?

Re: Ideapad 710S stuck in boot options menu (sometimes)

The BIOS settings may have been corrupted, or become unstable. To fix this, one must drain the power from the notebook to force the BIOS to reset, then enter BIOS and "set defaults' to bring in the factory settings for optimal performance.

Once this has been done, the boot order in BIOS will return to working order and the system should respond normally.

Or your problem is a defective hard drive. That is you need to have it replace. Since as stated you're not too familiar with computers better let Lenovo replace it for you by calling them and make arrangement or you can ask somebody with such skill to do it for you.

Also, try re-seating the HDD & Ram module. Kindly go through this HMM for better understanding.

Update us how it goes.

Re: Ideapad 710S stuck in boot options menu (sometimes)

Well the problem has not occured again until now.. It's hard to say if anything is a fix to it if I can't reproduce it. I have noted your tips from the last reply and will try those in case it happens again. Until then I can't say.

I was trying to pinpoint what the problem could be with this post, I just can't wrap my head around it. If it is a hardware problem it would explain the random behaviour, but I don't understand why it hasn't happened again then. If it is Software it's just too complex for me to understand.

Thanks in any case!

I might update this post if the problem occurs again.
