Ideapad 720s Charge via Thunderbolt

2019-07-03, 12:24 PM

Hello! I bought a few days ago a new Lenovo Ideapad 720s-13IKB (model 81A8), with an Intel Core i7 7500u processor. I noticed that this laptop features a Thunderbolt 3 port and, given that both the laptop description and user guide pointed out that this model can be charged by using this port, I wanted to check if it is really possible to use either the dedicated Usb Type-C port or the Thunderbolt port to charge the laptop. Sadly, my laptop won't charge via Thunderbolt, neither if it is powered and booted to Windows, nor if it is turned off or running in Bios. However, I found that, by pressing the "Details" button of Thunderbolt Settings (from taskbar), it says that, indeed, I have a Thunderbolt 3 port, but it says: "PD Firmware veriosn : N/A".

So, my question is: is my laptop capable of being charged from Thunderbolt, or I need to change something about my Thunderbolt firmware? Thank you in advance for help!

Re: Ideapad 720s Charge via Thunderbolt

Hi marianFCBT,

Greetings.

Checking with the product specification sheet shows:

Two USB 3.1 Gen 1 (one for Always On Charging), audio combo jack,

one USB 3.1 Type-C Gen 1 (support power delivery)

one USB 3.1 Type-C Gen 2 (support Thunderbolt 3, DisplayPort 1.2a, power delivery, HDMI or VGA)

Only the type C USB port with the power plug icon is dedicated to charge the power demand of the laptop as mentioned in this independent review video (2:50). Take note as other may claim able to charge slowly, only KBLR models can support PD.

I hope this helps answer your query.

Regards

Well, this explains everything! Thank you for helping me clarify this question! Now, I hope that I will find a compatible Usb-C or Thunderbolt adapter to plug in all my cables!
