LENOVO IDEAPAD 520S-14IKBR (81BL005YMH) (new intel i5-8250u + M.2 ssd) usb-C with thunderbold?

Hi, I am wondering if the recently upgraded Ideapad 520s-14IKBR (Intel core i5-8250u, 8GB DDR4, 128gb m.2 ssd, intel UHD graphics 620) has thunderbolt on the USB-C port? As far as I could find the previous versions don't have thunderbolt, only the 720s models. I hope they improved this new version with a thunderbolt connection.

I also want to upgrade the native m.2 SSD for a Samsung 960 EVO so I can enable hardware encryption on it.

Does anybody know which SSD is used in this model and does it already support SSD hardware encryption (TCG Opal) like the samsung does?

Does this motherboard support a PCIe 3.0x4 NVMe SSD like the Samsung 960 EVO?

Here are some specs: https://us.hardware.info/product/413163/lenovo-ideapad-520s-14ikbr-81bl005ymh/specifications

I can't find any further info (or user manual) on this model and I can't even find the model on the Lenovo website except for the older models like 520s-IKB.

Hope someone can help me out.

Thank you!

Ok I've done some more research and it seems that the SSd m.2 is just the one with the SATA III interface and not the PCIe like the 720s models have, so the samsung evo 960 isn't compatible with this model.

There's also no Thunderbolt 3 USB-c port on this model, but the 720s models have.

I think I'll spend some extra and go for the Lenovo Ideapad 720s-13IKBR (81BV004YMH) instead.

Hey, could you specify where you found out that the M.2 PCIe in this model does not support NVMe?

I have this exact model (81BL0017CK to be specific = i5-8250U + 128GB M.2 + 1TB HDD) and I'm trying to find out if the board supports NVMe, but with no success. I can't find any good hardware specs anywhere on Lenovo site, nor can I find this info from within the system (HW utilities like Speccy or CrystalDiskInfo don't seem to specify if the drive/slot is NVMe friendly or not).

I'm just wondering if there's a possible future option for a faster (and bigger, while we're at it) drive.

Thanks

Re: LENOVO IDEAPAD 520S-14IKBR (81BL005YMH) (new intel i5-8250u + M.2 ssd) usb-C with thunderbold?

Hey, I found a hardware maintenance manual from the 520s-14IKB and the --IKBR is just the upgraded version of this laptop.

As far as I know they only upgraded this with the new 8th gen processor and UHD graphics and did not upgrade the enitre motherboard with the new PCIe 3.0 x4 connector for NVME support.

The manual says it has the m.2 form factor, but the one wich still has the SATAIII interface. In that case it's nothing more than a smaller sized regular SSD as far as I know and it's still limited to the max. SATAIII speeds at 600MB/s.

The 720s series (the more expensive series) does have the PCIe 3.0 x4 with NVME support so you can use the fastest m.2 SSD. This one also supports the thunderbolt 3.0 connector USB 3.1 2nd gen (The real high speed 3.1 USB, instead of the often advertised "USB 3.1 1st gen" which actually still is USB 3.0).

You can download the Hardware maintenance manual here on the lenovo site:

https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/nl/nl/products/laptops-and-netbooks/500-series/520s-14ikb/documentation

If you are looking for a Hardware info tool which shows more detailled information about you motherboard etc. you should download (the free version of) SiSoftware Sandra.

This shows way more details than tools like speccy and can also provide you with the PCIe or SATA connector information you need.

http://www.sisoftware.eu/download-lite/

Hope this is the answer you were looking for.

Hi, thank you! Could not find this particular hw manual before.

However, I found out, that in my 520s the M.2 SSD is called THNSN5128GPUK, which is exactly the FRU also mentioned in the manual (page 73 of the manual or 77 of the pdf itself).

You can find the information about this drive on Toshiba website in the catalog here.

Interface / Connector Type: PCIe Rev. 3.1 Gen3x4L, NVMe Rev. 1.1b / M.2 M

Of course its possible they used NVMe drive in non-NVMe M.2 motherboard connector, but that seems highly unlikely to me.

So it looks like the 520s's (at least the ones equipped with THNSN5128GPUK, but probably even the others) have in fact NVMe PCIe interface.

Edit: The missing Thunderbolt on USB Type-C is a shame, thats true. But for me personally that's not that big of an issue, taking the price of the laptop in the consideration.

Take care!

I think Metasoniz is wrong in his conclusion. I've just upgraded my IdeaPad 520s-14ikb (not even the upgraded 'ikbr'!) with an Intel 600p M.2 SSD 256GB PCIe 3.0x4 . It has a nominal reading rate of 1570MB/s, which according to AS-SSD benchmark is almost achieved for sequential read (Lesen),

as-ssd-bench NVMe INTEL SSDPE 13.01.2018 20-02-33.pngas-ssd-benchmark

thus proving that the IdeaPad 520s-14 features an M.2 with PCIe3.0x4, after all! Man LOL
