Lenovo ideapad 720S-15IKB

2018-01-25, 16:44 PM

I am adding a Samsung 960 EVO SSD in the extra M.2 port of an LENOVO LNVNB161216
motherboard.

The SSD is advertised at 3,200/1,800 MBps speeds. In my M.2 port, CrystalDiskMark reads only about half these speeds, topping out at about 1,800/1,500.

Can I find out for nvme ssd PCI Express slot generation??

Is it 'PCIe Gen. 3 x 4' Or 'PCIe Gen. 2 x 4' ??

Thank you for your answer

but I already check out Product specitication and my original ssd is super fast like a specs.

In motherboard there's one more extra m.2 nvme slot. so few days ago I added samsung evo 960 ssd on my one extra slot. that mean my laptop have 2 ssd totally.

I was expecting similar speed as original(first) ssd. but my second ssd is so slower than specs.

I think in motherboard(Motherboard Model: LENOVO LNVNB161216) there's two m.2 nvme slot and there are different generation supported. I just wanna check it because my second ssd is still faster even slower than as specs.

Hi acejjeon,

Greetings.

Checking on the block diagram it show both m.2 SSD interface shows the same generation.

Advertised benchmarks do not necessary show functional speed when applied to a system considering that regulations can be done by the BIOS and chipset for full system performance. You can try swapping your drive each to test for performance speed from which would you prefer best.

On an independent review here also show1245MB/sec (read) and 555MB/sec (write).

Regards

Thanks for the reply. But I still wonder. Why would I have exactly the first ssd and second ssd half the speed difference?

Hi acejjeon,

Just like the answer to your initial query and block diagram, both M.2 have same generation and chipset. Try swapping it and check otherwise use another machine to compare result.

Hello,

I have installed an OEM Samsung PM961 256GB NVMe SSD into the 2nd slot and can confirm its only running at Link Speed X2 not X4 as advertised. Attached are the screenshots. Currently I have then configured for Raid 0 and because of the link speed of the 2nd slot, the speed increase is minimal. Not worth it in my opinion...

I got the same problem today.
I installed second ssd (PM961 512 GB; spec: 3,000/1,150) and CrystalDiskMark reads only the half, ~1750 MB/s.
Is there a problem somewhere on the board?

I'm also interested in this as I just bought the Samsung 970 EVO PCI NVME SSD (500gb) and plan to install it as secondary drive. I chose this drive as its the latest and greatest, but there are definitely cheaper alternatives if the motherboard do not read/write at the speed of the SSD specs. Please update us all if you have any news. Thanks.

Hello DNA_Lor,

Yeah nothing has changed. Unless the limitation on the 2nd NVMe slot is software limited, its up to Lenovo to fix. I have started using ssd caching software and that makes a huge difference. Getting 10k-11k read / write speeds. Good enough for me!

Primo Cache, works really good. Even speeds up the micro sd card slot to make running programs from it good :-)

It uses your ram like the Samsung Magician does with Rapid Mode.
