Possible storage upgrade on Ideapad 120s (81A400DNAU/81A5008SAU)..?

Sorry for the cross-post but thought it best to post a new topic to be specific.

Following on from this topic...

Are there any 120S variants that have eMMC and the M.2 port? Unless some variant shipped without the M.2 connector, I would suggest all of them have it. From the manual, even the 120S-11IAP with HDD variant still looks like it has the M.2 port - not that you can use it (the battery appears to interfere). In fact, if all variants ship with the M.2 connector, then the only variant that cannot use the M.2 port would be the 120S-11IAP with HDD, yes..?!?! The units without a HDD appear to have an "L" shaped battery pack that occupies the HDD location exposing the M.2 slot.

Can anyone confirm whether the 81A400DNAU or 81A5008SAU variants sold in Australia has the M.2 connector and "L" shaped battery pack...?

Hi benyamin74,

Greetings.

Using parts lookup for MTM 81A400DNAU:

Systemboard (part number 5B20P23796 MB 3N 81A4 N3350WIN UMA R4G32G, W/o Battery) no connector port

Battery (part number 5B10P23779 BATTERY 3N 81A4/81A5 32W) is L shaped.

Re: Possible storage upgrade on Ideapad 120s (81A400DNAU/81A5008SAU)..?

Thanks spidey101.

It seems a bit strange that the system boards for each should have a SATA connector that cannot be used because of the battery type and space for an M.2 SSD that cannot be used because there is no connector...

I note that the part list is is for the generic 120S-11IAP type 81A4 and that the 81A5008SAU lists the same for the generic 120S-11IAP type 81A5. If I was to put in a serial number for each, do you think the system board would be any different...?

Re: Possible storage upgrade on Ideapad 120s (81A400DNAU/81A5008SAU)..?

Hi benyamin74,

Greetings.

I like using the serial number better since it can give the exact parts of the machine configuration. I am not optimistic that it would give it differently using the SN unless the package does include M.2 SSD.

Try yours on the part look up page and click on commodity type > systemboard to check the part number. SN are confidential user info and should not be posted publicly but generally shares major parts (specially systemboard) with all other model with the same  MTM.

As I have checked on other model 81A4, different systemboard are offered and most likely it would come with those MTM/ SN with SSD m,2 offered in the package, although I did not see much of those offered in your region. Smaller 11"" form factors and slim version is limited by its size so the 14"" version most likely have such.

Systemboard that I was able to see is with part number 5B20P23789 MB 3N 81A4 N3350WIN UMA R4G, W/o Battary  among listed 81A4 boards with image but unable to search further on which MTM its being offered with.

Thanks again spidey101.

I managed to check some serial numbers in store, and none of the eMMC models on offer had an M.2 connector installed on the system board. The next variant "up" that had an M.2 connector was the 81A5003BAU which shipped with a 128GB SSD. Checking all the system boards, there doesn't appear to be any with eMMC storage and M.2 connectors. As per the OP here.

Hello,

I have also the problem with storage with 32GB eMMC. I opened the notebook, and there is no M.2 connector for SSD. I would ask, if it is possible to solder the connector into this pins? Can the notebook read from this? Or it must be installed something to BIOS?
