Re: RAM stick is not detected - Lenovo IdeaPad 330-15ICH

The Lenovo IdeaPad 330-15ICH that I bought not more than three days ago came along with only 4GB of RAM onboard. Not long after, I decided to upgrade it to 8GB, so I bought a 4GB RAM stick from Kingston which has the exact same characteristics as the integrated one. Here are the specifications:

Integrated RAM: Samsung M471A5244CB0-CTD / 4GB / DDR4 / SODIMM / 2400MHz / 1.2 V

Bought RAM: Kingston KVR24S17S8/4 / 4GB / DDR4 / SODIMM / 2400MHz / 1.2 V

And my laptop cannot detect the Kingston stick for some reason. The "System" page inside of Windows displays only 4GB of RAM available and the BIOS aswell. I tried to do a BIOS update ( as sugested on another thread ), but I have the latest version already installed. I've opened up the laptop again, took the RAM stick out, placed it back, just to make sure it sits well inside the slot. And still nothing. I even tried the "msconfig-boot settings" procedure, only to make it worse (2.16GB usable in the end) and had to reset Windows.

What should I do?

Is that kingston Value ram?  There are several posts with people that have problems with Value ram on laptops.

Re: RAM stick is not detected - Lenovo IdeaPad 330-15ICH

Hi Makaveli68,

Welcome to the community forums.

You may try these steps and see if the RAM stick will be detected:

1. Click on Start.
2. Type MSCONFIG in Search and click OK.
3. This will open the System Configuration Utility. Click on the BOOT tab.
4. Click on the Advanced Options... button
5. If the /MAXMEM= box is checked, please uncheck it.
6. If it isn’t already checked, check it now and enter your total amount of memory in MB (e.g. 8192 for 8GB) and click OK.

Let us know how it goes.

The same thing happens as I've stated above. I've done as you said, but the laptop still detects 4GB of RAM, and to make matters even worse, I'm back to the 2.16GB usable mark.

Have you tried testing the brand new Kingston RAM you've purchased on a different computer to isolate the case?

Re: RAM stick is not detected - Lenovo IdeaPad 330-15ICH

Sadly, I don't have other computer/laptop that supports DDR4 SODIMM memory. There's an older one, with DDR3 RAM onboard, but I don't think I could pull this out with it.

I'm afraid this might be off-topic, but there's also another problem that I have with this laptop. The following day after I bought it, the laptop boots up, displaying the folowing message:

"Intel UNDI, PXE-2.1 (build 083)

 Copyright (C) 1997-2000 Intel Corporation

This product is covered by one or more of the following patents:

 US6,570,884,  US6,115,776 and US6,327,625

Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller Series v2.66 (05/26/17)

PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable

 PXE-MOF: Exiting PXE ROM."

I've made a little research on the internet and found out that this has something to do with the HDD. Possibly. And maybe with the RAM, but I don't know for sure because I'm not an expert. And it is quite annoying because, strangely, I have to enter the BIOS by repeatedly pressing F2, and then closing it, so that the laptop can finally boot to Windows. And so, I have yet to find a viable solution to this problem too.

One possible explanation I have for this PXE failure might be that I (by mistake) installed an Intel Rapid Technology driver from the laptop's support page and managed to mess up the HDD boot procedure. But then again, it might be linked to the RAM issue too.

Re: RAM stick is not detected - Lenovo IdeaPad 330-15ICH

Let us run a test using CPU-Z on your computer for us to check on the RAM. On the CPU-Z app go to the SPD tab and check if it is detected.

Regarding with the PXE boot error on your computer, this might be an issue with the boot configuration of your computer. You can boot to the BIOS simply by pressing the Novo Button while the computer is off. Here's a guide on how to locate the Novo Button on your computer https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht062552

Then Choose BIOS. On the BIOS of the computer, press the Fn+F9 to load setup defaults, choose yes and the save and exit.

Also, kindly check if this option is applicable on the BIOS of your computer.

Make sure that the Boot mode is on UEFI

Regards,

[+Jerry_Lenovo]

With the great help of your tips, I managed to fix the PXE problem! Thank you so much!

Although the "fun" ain't over yet. Upon your request, I've installed CPU-Z and took three screenshots of following:  "Memory" Tab, "SPD" Tab Slot #1 and Slot #2.

Re: RAM stick is not detected - Lenovo IdeaPad 330-15ICH

Ok, so it's been a few days since this post was last active. In the meantime, I managed to discover that, by removing the Kingston RAM stick from the laptop, CPU-Z will display Slot #1 as empty, such as Slot #2, as seen above. So, that means that it can detect the RAM stick after all, right?

Re: RAM stick is not detected - Lenovo IdeaPad 330-15ICH

It's possible that this is a compatibility issue or the Kingston stick is defective. Since we can't test that the Kingston memory on other laptop. Could you try to replace the 4gb ram with the Kingston ram? Check if it will boot and detected by the laptop. Matt_lenovo
