Spiking CPU causing lag with ideapad310

2020-01-23, 2:26 AM

out of nowhere my computer will run really hard and my cpu spikes up to 99% for no reason. I am not a gamer and I only use this laptop for personal business and surfing the web. I have McAfee antivirus/malware which I thought might be causing the problem. I contacted them and there is no conflict with windows 10, defender or the firewall. The tech suggested reaching out to manufacturer as it may be an internal processor problem or something else. I am just wondering if anyone has experienced similar issues or have some suggestions. This is quite annoying and distracting. thanks!

Well, my T460s has no 3rd party Anti-virus software installed, but the Windows Defender will run a scan in the background occasionally which drastically increase resources usage when it happens.

Open "Task Manager" (ctrl + alt + del --> Task Manager) and see which program is using most of the resources.

Legions, thanks. I have been playing detective in task mgr since it started and the culprit has been elusive. For example, I had task mgr opened while I created this post within the Lenovo app on one monitor while firefox and tsk mgr ran on second monitor. As usu when spike occurred I checked and all I noticed was spike for firefox but not as high as total cpu of 99% and nothing else is open and running. What could be running and not register in task mgr. also I wonder if it has anything to do with disabling cortana.

Cortana does quite resources hungry. I normally disable it.
