ideapad 330s won't shut down cycles on and off

I have a Lenovo Ideapad 330s, and recently it won't shut down. Windows appears to run fine, but when I try to shut it down this happens:

1. It will seem to shutdown but then starts to power back on, then shuts off, then power on (each lasting about 1-2" in a continuous cycle of on and off)

2. I usually can't get it to start back up in this state (although it did a few times), unless I use the Novo button on the side, then it starts up and Windows works.

I've browsed the forums and tried the following:

1. Turned off fast startup in Windows.

2. I let the laptop completely die, and then I held the power button for 15 seconds. I then plugged in the laptop and opened it back up but it went into the on and off cycle.

3.  I accessed and unplugged the battery in the laptop, and held the power button for 15 seconds. I re-attached the battery and when I opened the laptop it was still in the start-stop cycle.

Other information: I have updated virus protection that says no viruses, and I am running Windows 10. The laptop is 1.5 years old.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: ideapad 330s won't shut down cycles on and off

Hi @BrandonT31 ,

Welcome to Community Forums!

You can try the troubleshooting steps provided in this article regarding Computer Reboots Itself after Shutdown – Unable To Shutdown:

https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht117681.

If above steps won't work, you may try this option:

Load BIOS defaults https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht500222.

Navigate in BIOS and change settings:

  • Security >Secure boot >Secure boot --> disabled
  • Restart > Load setup defaults - OS optimized defaults --> disabled

Give us an update on how it goes.

Regards

Malvin_Lenovo

Re: ideapad 330s won't shut down cycles on and off

The first step didn't work. The second step didn't either, but I was only able to turn off secure boot. There wasn't a section in my bios on restart and looked through the bios and didn't see anything similar.

Re: ideapad 330s won't shut down cycles on and off

Hi BrandonT31 ,

Thanks for replying.

Sorry for the confusion.

Navigate in BIOS and change settings:

  • Security >Secure boot >Secure boot --> disabled
  •  Restart the computer
  • Open BIOS then go to Exit tab > Load default settings > hit Yes
  •  OS optimized defaults --> disabled
  • Press F10 then Save and Exit

Update us on how it goes.

Regards

Re: ideapad 330s won't shut down cycles on and off

Actually, it seems it still won't shut down but now it just turns back on and loads windows, rather than cycling on and off repeatedly.

update: I tried shutting down a couple of times again and it did the same as before: cycled on and off repeatedly.

Re: ideapad 330s won't shut down cycles on and off

Hi @BrandonT31,

Thanks for replying.

You can try these steps:

Settings > System > Power & Sleep > Additional power settings > Choose what the power buttons do.
Then check that your power and sleep buttons are set correctly.

If above steps won't fix it, try to run sfc scan using command prompt to detect and automatically fix mssing or corrupted files in Windows:

  • Press Windows key + R
  • Inside the Run box type cmd then press enter
  • Inside the Command Prompt box, type cmd > press enter

It may take several minutes to fully scan the machine. Then test again if computer will shutdown.

If issue still persists, you may need to perform a reset or clean install of Windows. Make sure that you back-up your files before doing it.

Update us on how it goes.

Regards

I formatted the computer/re-installed Windows without keeping personal files. It's still having the same problem.

Re: ideapad 330s won't shut down cycles on and off

Hi BrandonT31,

Thanks for replying.

If you already tried reinstalling Windows and the issue still pesists, it's a possible hardware failure.

Please call Tech Support for repair options if unit is still under warranty.

You can also check the Service Providers List in your location.

Regards

Re: ideapad 330s won't shut down cycles on and off

Any idea what software would have died to cause this error? There aren't any lenovo stores in my area according to that site. I'd maybe try to fix something myself.

The laptop is 1.5 years old and is out of the 1-year warranty, but I've never had any other computer/laptops die nearly this quickly.

And we're back...

Move delayed but still coming
