ideapad 52015IKB cant boot from external HDD

In my old laptop,  i used a dual boot enovironment with Linux and Windows 7. My old laptop crashed, i took out the hard-disk and made it portable.

Now when i connect it to my new Lenovo ideapad 52015IKB, i am not able to boot from my portable HDD.

Also, i took a glance in bios setup and there was no boot priority list.
I have important data in my that hard disk, kindly help.

Thank you..

Re: ideapad 52015IKB cant boot from external HDD

Hi Nyk1! Welcome to our forums community. Is the laptop able to detect the external drive? Is the drive connected via USB? May we know what happen to the previous computer? Let us know.

Regards

Re: ideapad 52015IKB cant boot from external HDD

Sorry for replynig so late.

My old laptop had some problem with its motherboard and the technician reccomended to either change the motherboard or buy a new one. So i chose the later option.

Althoug its hard disk is completely fine. I used a transcend " 2.5” SSD/HDD Enclosure " kit to enclose the hard disk.

I connect it via USB to my new lenovo laptop. I am quite sure that hard disk is working fine because i accessed the files easily and there no signs of any damage, everything worked smoothly and as expected.

The main reason i want to boot from the hard disk is that, i  want access the files that were stored  on linux desktop, because when i connect the hard disk to my laptop, windows can't detect the file format of the partition which was used for linux.

And another reason is that i am curious and i want to learn that how can i boot a lenovo laptop from external HDD or an external USB pendrive.

Re: ideapad 52015IKB cant boot from external HDD

Have you already made changes in the BIOS of your 520? Try to go in to the BIOS (follow the steps for "To enter BIOS via Novo button" of this link:

https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht500216 ), then go to the EXIT tab, look for "OS optimize default" and disable it, then press ENTER to confirm. Once done, select "Load Default settings", then ENTER to confirm. After that, double check if "OS optimize default"  is still disabled, if not, disable it once again. Then "Exit Saving changes". Connect your external HDD, and then access the Boot Menu via the Novo Button, then select your External HDD

Re: ideapad 52015IKB cant boot from external HDD

As suggested above, you may be trying to boot a legacy drive in UEFI mode.  If disabling OS-optimized mode doesn't do the job - look for an explicit legacy-mode setting.

If your main priority is extracting data from the Linux partition(s), try booting a live Ubuntu flash drive and using that to transfer files from the external drive to your main drive or other storage device.

To create a UEFI-bootable Ubuntu drive, download the ISO and extract its contents (using Win 10 Windows Explorer or other unarchiving tool) to a FAT32-formatted flash drive.

Re: ideapad 52015IKB cant boot from external HDD

Thanks MarioIII_Lenovo and zoltanthegypsy for taking out time and replying to my query.
i stopped my hesitation and took the risk.
i was able to boot from my external hard disk.
what did was that i changed the boot option from UEFI to legacy and i was able to boot from the hard-disk.

Now, i am facing another problem. I want to make dual boot environment on my laptop, both ubuntu and the windows 10 that i got along with this laptop.

I installed ubunut but i did it in legacy, when bios is on legacy it boots to ubuntu and when on uefi it boots to windows 10.

What can i do that every time i start my laptop, the boot loader asks me to choose the OS. ?

Re: ideapad 52015IKB cant boot from external HDD

Reinstall Ubuntu in UEFI mode.  Ubuntu should happily install and boot in UEFI mode, even with secure boot on.
