For the last 1+ year, I had changed all newest BIOS'es including the last one (E5CN63WW),
got the battery out and in again several times, the problem exists still.
Keys: ASDF JKL:" - doesn't work all the time.
Lenovo service refused me with help on every stage.
I will never buy the Lenovo laptop.

I've had this problem intermittently since 3 months ago and I discovered intuitively the same workaround as you, but some day it did not work anymore and the portable could not be bent more. Apart from that, I felt ridiculous in the co-working pressing hard on my portable to recover the Ctrl key function.
What I've done (also intuitively) but it works so far (fingers crossed) is to remove that back cover, free the keyboard flat cable, cut about 0.1 -0.2 mm of it in the edge with a small pair of scissors and connect it again.
I am sure this is a hardware problem. For some reason the cable gets deteriorated in its connection and needs to be renewed a little.
Hope this helps.
I registered to this forum just to thank you.
I had been gradually losing my key functionality and my asdfjklñ and 'fn' keys were dead.
THIS SOLVED THE PROBLEM!
When it wears down again I will cut it again, and so on until I have to buy a new flat cable or something.

I found the problem was with the cable!
I tried to cut off about 2-3 millimeters of cable, that connects a keyboard to the motherboard.
After that problem was solved.

I'm glad you solved it this way. I'm very happy with my computer since then. Lenovo is to be blamed for this, but it does good computers in every other aspect, to be honest.
